About the role

The Mine Geology team supports all BHP Coal assets in Queensland and New South Wales. Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Geology, your role is principally to ensure sufficient resource characterisation to enable our sites to deliver their plans.

In this role you will:
  • Seek to understand the value drivers for the mine site; assess and communicate technical risk, including the geological uncertainty and potential impact;
  • Support planning with longer term focus and analysis of geology;
  • Continuously improve procedures and processes; 
  • Mentor and coach Mine Geologists;
  • Own work programme design; informing strategic business decisions, de-risking the five year plan and optimising production; and
  • Manage technical delivery; delivering validation and interpretation of exploration data, understanding how changes our resource knowledge impacts value, and working with stakeholders to ensure well informed business decisions.

This role is well supported by the diverse experience we currently have within the team, as well as close working relationships with our technical experts (Geophysics, Structural, Mineral Systems, and Gas). About You

Naturally, you will be inquisitive, collaborative and motivated by a technical challenge. You have an ability to understand and articulate geological complexities in a simple business context, supporting stakeholders who are both internal and external, technical and non-technical.

Comfort with change is imperative. Mine Geology has embraced technical improvements including the Integration of drone photogrammetry, real time recording of production drill rig data, hyperspectral, and automated technologies. This is a unique opportunity to lead change within the coal mining industry and we need a team who are proactive and innovative; skills in technology, data science or business development are favourable.

This role is equally suited to leadership or technical ambition, with potential to grow both in this role and with BHP. You are motivated to learn each day, and are passionate about coaching and mentoring others.
