About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a senior strategic planning engineer to join our team, based in Adelaide to support BHP’s South Australian mining operation. We are looking for an experienced senior engineer, who is ready for a challenge, and keen to make a significant contribution to one of Australia’s largest, and most complex mines at a pivotal point for Olympic Dam.

Our Operation

It’s an exciting time to be at Olympic Dam! We are accessing the 70% of the orebody that hasn’t been touched in the first 25 years of operation.

There is an opportunity to increase production at Olympic Dam through low-risk, capital efficient underground development and optimisation of underground and surface infrastructure. So we are looking for truly exceptional candidates to study, and plan for future growth options to ensure Olympic Dam grows in a safe and sustainable way - delivering value for generations to come.

About the role

Reporting to the Superintendent Strategic Planning, this team’s purpose is to unlock value through the development of value accretive resource engineering options, strategic asset planning, provision of mining and metallurgical technical direction and industry leading solutions to strategic problems.

Within this team, the Senior Strategic Planning Engineer provides significant input into the direction of Olympic Dam, including mine planning, inputs to major projects, strategic optimisations and much more.  It is a foundational time at Olympic Dam and this position plays an important role.

This role offers a great challenge in that it is a multi-commodity mine with a mine and integrated plant (concentrator, hydrometallurgical plant, smelter and refinery) and exposure to the broader business compared to a traditional Mining Engineer role. In addition to collaborating with the operations, geosciences and mine planning teams, there are interactions with experts in studies, processing, surface infrastructure, closure, business planning and the Centres of Excellence.
As a collaborative leader, you can shape the future of this exciting resource.

This position is based in our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday roster with site visits as required - As noted, we are open to discussing flexible working opportunities including part-time work!

In this role, you will:
  • Develop executable strategic mine designs which are guided by the optimised mine scenarios that take into consideration safety, technology, master plans, infrastructure, sequencing and system constraints
  • Identify and plan for potential competitive advantage in Olympic Dam’s value chain from resource to mill
  • Support the Competent Person with the declaration and reporting of Ore Reserves
  • Contribute to the high quality delivery of the Mining Chapters of the Major Growth Projects
  • Actively engage and influence with study teams, Mine Planning and other stakeholders, to provide specialist mining technical knowledge
  • Coordinate the resourcing requirements to deliver mine plans for Studies and Life of Asset purposes
  • Complete cost model for Order of Magnitude level studies and maintain a valuation model to allow comparison between mine planning scenarios
  • Contribute to the development of the culture of continuous improvement
  • Support Master Planning (Services, Layout and Infrastructure) to provide a single source of the truth for current and future growth options
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of innovation and technology advancements in the industry, which drive mine safety, productivity & efficiency. You will work closely with the Global Technology team
  • Scan the industry and stay at the forefront of operational knowledge and technical excellence on strategic mine designs and innovative technologies

About You

  • Degree qualified in Mining (or equivalent) Engineering with a strategic mindset
  • Expertise in underground hard rock mining operations
  • Highly analytical and able to provide insights with varying levels of ambiguity
  • Confident in stakeholder engagement
  • Experience in highly complex orebodies (desirable)
  • Study management experience or understanding (desirable)
  • Looking for an exciting challenge
  • Able to challenge existing paradigms
  • Proven ability to influence and mentor others in HSEC principles and behaviours
  • Commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to understand business drivers
  • Proficiency in Deswik (desirable)
