About the role

Reporting to the Superintendent Strategic Planning, this team’s purpose is to unlock value through the development of value accretive resource engineering options, strategic asset planning, provision of mining and metallurgical technical direction and applying industry leading solutions to strategic problems.

Within this team, the Senior Strategic Planning Engineer provides significant input to the direction of Olympic Dam, including mine planning, inputs to major projects, strategic optimisation and more. It is an emergent time at Olympic Dam and this position plays an important role.

This role offers a great challenge within a multi-commodity mine, supplying integrated surface plant (concentrator, hydrometallurgical plant, smelter and refinery), offering exposure to the broader business compared to a traditional Mining Engineer role. In addition to working directly with operations, geosciences and other mine planning teams, there are interfaces with studies, processing, surface infrastructure, closure, business planning and the BHP Centres of Excellence.

This position is based in our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday roster with site visits as required - As noted, we are open to discussing flexible working opportunities including part-time work!

In this role, you will:
  • Develop executable, strategic mine designs considering safety, technology, infrastructure, sequencing and system constraints
  • Identify and plan for competitive advantage within Olympic Dam’s value chain from resource to smelter
  • Support the Competent Person with evaluation and reporting of Ore Reserves
  • Provide mining engineering input, contributing to high quality delivery of Major Growth Projects
  • Actively engage and influence operational and study teams to ensure alignment of mine planning from long term through medium and short time frames
  • Work collaboratively within planning and technical, and broadly across the operation, to apply specialist mining knowledge to solving complex problems.
  • Coordinate the resourcing requirements to deliver mine plans for Studies and Life of Asset purposes
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
  • Apply divergent thought to value optimisation for the operation
  • Support Master Planning to provide directional alignment for current and future growth options
  • Scan the industry and stay at the forefront of operational knowledge and technical excellence on strategic mine designs and innovative technologies

About You

  • Looking for an exciting challenge
  • Degree qualified in Mining (or equivalent) Engineering with a strategic mindset
  • Expertise in underground hard rock mining operations
  • Proven ability to influence and mentor others in HSEC principles and behaviours
  • Confident in stakeholder engagement
  • Experience in complex orebodies
  • Able to challenge existing paradigms
  • Commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to understand business drivers
  • Study management experience or understanding (desirable)
  • Proficiency in mine planning software. Deswik desirable
