About the role

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is Australia's largest metallurgical coal miner and exporter. BMA continues to build upon its strong position within the sector by increasing production at existing operations and identifying strong growth opportunities.

The Specialist Site Improvement, reporting to the Superintendent Site Improvement, will be responsible for the successful execution of improvement projects at Saraji Mine. This is a small but high performing team, responsible for leading change and improvement which materially shifts the dial on Saraji’s performance. The Specialist Site Improvement will identify and execute projects designed to unlock value and reduce waste through embedding continuous improvement deep into our culture.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Demonstrate an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Identifying, framing, scheduling and managing key improvement projects, spanning across all departments in safety, culture, cost and throughput 
  • Coaching in continuous improvement from the front-line through to leadership 
  • Supporting the Superintendent Site Improvement and teams at Saraji to embed Continuous Improvement routines and management of their initiative portfolios 
  • Training and coaching in WAVE for new users
  • Reporting and other tasks as directed

Saraji is located in Dysart, QLD, and offers the unique benefit of living locally or Drive in Drive on a flexible working roster. Accommodation and meals are provided at a modern accommodation village located close to the mine for employees who opt to drive in and out or alternatively, residential housing may be available.

About You

The behavioural qualities you exhibit in this role will be critical to set the expectation to all employees at site to ensure the timely delivery of improvement projects. Therefore, you must be passionate and have high energy levels, to ensure that together we are improving Saraji every day.

Your skills in influencing, problem solving and facilitation, along with the ability to challenge existing thinking will play a key part in this role. You will possess a demonstrated strength in a combination of the following areas:
  • Understanding of the BHP Operating System, Theory of Constraints, Toyota Production Systems or Lean concepts and application
  • Prior experience in portfolio and project management (full lifecycle) or supply chain improvement projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to clearly tailor complex information and deliver key messages into an easy-to-understand format
  • Ability to use simple statistical and graphical tools such as pareto analysis 
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and synthesis skills
  • Budgeting and finance skills
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project
  • SAP experience is desirable
  • Plant and operations experience desired but not essential
  • University degree in one of the following disciplines; Engineering, Operations Research, Business, Science, Finance, Commerce (or similar) would be advantageous but not essential
