Our Operations

About the role

The Specialist Cost Engineer reports to the Manager for Cost Engineering Major Projects and sits within our Finance division. In this role you will provide specialist advice, execute analysis of the operation’s end-to-end cost base and production performance, as well as develop operating and sustaining capital cost estimates for Life of Asset Plans and Major Projects.

In this role you will:

  • Comply to and consistently follow the standards and procedures designed to enable you to work safely and effectively every day
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Develop operating and sustaining capital cost inputs in accordance with the minimum requirements appropriate to the class of estimate
  • Ensure alignment and consistent use of engineering deliverables, scope of work and other documents to develop estimates
  • Develop and consolidate the basis of estimate including any assumptions, qualifications and exclusions
  • Maintain full traceability of the cost estimate to the input documents used in preparing the cost estimate and ensure consistency
  • Consult with scope owners on a regular basis to ensure that any changes to the project scope and/or execution are reflected in the cost estimate
  • Integrate cost estimate information from necessary members of the project team, contractors and other contributors
  • Actively participate in range analysis
  • Provide expertise to other sub functions in analysis of cost and performance indicators and metrics

About You

  • Bachelor of Engineering, Metallurgy, Finance, Construction Management and Economics, Quantity Surveying or other related discipline
  • Several years’ relevant experience
  • Demonstrated diversity of operational or projects exposure
  • Ability to operate at multiple levels and across disciplines
  • Financial modelling experience for large scale projects is highly desirable
  • Experience in key business systems, including 1SAP, MS Excel, CMS, P6, R, TM1
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional productivity which demonstrates reliability in getting the job done accurately and on time
  • Commitment to quality and continuous improvement

  • Self-driven, ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team
  • Effective relationship building capabilities across a matrix model of stakeholders
