About the role

BHP decision-makers require a proprietary global endowment tool to represent the embodiment of geoscientific knowledge and understanding that allows alignment with the company strategy to find, own, and operate large, long-life, low-cost assets.  Contributes to building a workflow for both top-down and bottom-up global endowment studies.  This is strategically critical in identifying new search spaces and quantifying discovery potential capable of delivering quality copper orebodies of interest to BHP globally.  

This position is a grade 8 role.

In this role you will:
  • Conformance with the BHP Billiton Charter, the BHP Billiton Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant internal and external regulatory requirements.
  • Contributes to the compilation of datasets, critical evaluation of data quality, and delivers it to a data lake hosted for the project
  • Contributes to building working 4 dimensional geological models at global and regional scale that fully integrates and honors multiple datasets (geological, geochemical and geophysical).
  • Provides expert data science skills in feature engineering and coding of key components of the relevant Minerals Systems Framework.
  • Ability to synthesise geological
  • Timely, accurate, and impactful reporting of outcomes and delivery of an “evergreen” tool to the Metals Exploration business.

About You

  • Degree in Geology from a reputable university
  • 2+ years experience in metal exploration and field competency. 
  • Understanding and familiarity with yet-to-find endowment studies, methodologies, and statistical analysis tools.
  • Expert coding foundation.           
  • Post-graduate studies highly regarded
  • Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, and able to think laterally on geological challenges.
  • Given the nature of this program, the position calls for strong technical and data science skills sets in order to build a credible workflow and contribute at a high level.  Specifically, the incumbent should have:
  • Understanding of porphyry arc systems and/or sedimentary copper basin environments.
  • Exposure to and understanding of numerical modelling for resource estimation, including yet-to-find endowment studies using Monte Carlo simulations or similar techniques
  • Familiarity with Fuzzy Logic and Machine Learning as applied to earth systems models
  • Experience with QGIS, data cleaning, Python coding, and other data science and visualization tools.
  • Ability to think laterally on complex solutions, rather than anchor to the known.
  • Recognizes inconsistencies in data or interpretation; resolves or recommends action to resolve
  • Communicates and clearly summarizes technical results and impact of analyses
