About the role

Key technical member of a small team of highly specialised experts responsible for identifying, assessing, and recommending third party opportunities for Exploration in commodities as directed by the Manager, New Opportunities. 

Leverages an internal and external network of contacts and business intelligence that allows BHP to move rapidly and decisively on new opportunities based on technical merit before they enter the public domain.

Champion technical excellence in copper and nickel geological evaluation.

In this role you will:
  • Identify and rank on technical merit new opportunities (both in operating countries and new geographies where BHP is prepared to enter) that have the chance to meet BHP technical hurdle rates (i.e. meet or exceed MRT).
  • Contribute to maintaining and sustaining a global scanning capability of projects and competitors, with appropriate higher resolution in those countries of specific interest.  This will include building effective “listening posts” to gather business intelligence.
  • Broad scan technical and business reports to identify at the earliest stage those opportunities that have the potential to meet MRT requirements and improve overall portfolio quality.
  • Advise the Manager, New Opportunities of new data and on-ground business intelligence that may allow actionable insights to be developed.
  • Participate in technical reviews at the country level based on deep knowledge of the porphyry copper, sediment–hosted copper, IOCG, and magmatic nickel deposits.
  • Champion the use of the Metals Atlas as a key tool for business intelligence and decision-making.  Extend the Atlas to consider key nickel assets.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the geosciences community across Metals Exploration, acting as a mentor for developing business acumen in the team
  • Provide timely, accurate, comprehensive, and credible technical reports and motivation documents for core Generative programs to assist and support high-quality decision-making in the team.

About You

  • Degree in Geology from a reputable university
  • 7+ years experience in geosciences, and appreciation of workflow as applied to base metal projects (especially nickel and copper) evaluation with a demonstrable track record of success.  
  • Understanding of key business drivers in mineral exploration.
  • Understanding and familiarity with JORC, NI43-101 or similar reporting code requirements.
  • Proficiency in the use of geological software to develop models.
  • Post-graduate studies highly regarded
  • Business education
  • Operational (mine or mine development) experience
  • English fluency, Spanish desirable
