About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

The mandate of BHP Access is to identify, evaluate, and ultimately secure new exploration and discovered resource opportunities for BHP outside of our existing petroleum heartlands.

The Exploration Access Capture (New Ventures) team is seeking a Specialist III geoscientist with a concentrated focus in structural geology and tectonics.  The ideal candidate has developed seismic interpretation skills and is capable of using their own and others’ interpretation products to generate high quality technical deliverables at the regional and play level.  As a member of the Capture team, you will be accountable for structural characterization of petroleum systems using various data types at multiple scales.  A focus of this role is the ability to deliver high quality technical products and integrate those products with outputs from other subsurface team members to understand volume, risk and ultimately value.  Emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s enthusiasm for exploration, past interpretation experience, and willingness to expand knowledgebase through interaction with internal expertise.

This is a grade 10 role.

The primary focus of this role is to contribute independently across your area of expertise within the Access Capture Exploration team.

In this role you will:
  • Describe exploration prospectivity in the context of basin and play scale petroleum system evaluations.
  • Solve exploration problems related to regional tectonics in both extensional and compressional structural domains, scaling from plate to pore if needed
  • Apply sound structural characterization for prospect definition, volumetric assessment, and risking.
  • Ensure consistent and high quality integrated technical products by working with others.
  • Liaise with other regional Exploration teams as well as our internal structural expertise.
  • Participate in internal and external trainings to develop deeper structural interpretation skills

About You

  • A proven professional with 5+ years of experience working as an exploration or development geologist, with an emphasis on structural interpretation in diverse tectonic settings
  • MSc or Ph.D. in geology with an emphasis on structural geology required.
  • Intellectual curiosity - idea generator with capability to identify and describe new plays and prospects
  • Past experience mapping at basin and play scale using sparse 2D seismic required.  Understanding and experience with 3D and potential field data seismic desired.
  • Understanding of plate kinematics, structural restoration, trap analysis, and fault and top seal controls.
  • Proficiency in seismic interpretation software such as Petrel or DSG
  • Basic understanding of stochastic volumetric modelling (e.g., GeoX)
  • Fundamental knowledge of key interpretation products required for complete volume, risk and value assessment at the play and prospect level
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across functions and businesses

Supporting a diverse workforce
