About the role

Based in Melbourne, the Specialist International Tax supports the overall Tax function by providing efficient, accurate and timely delivery of tax advisory, accounting, compliance, and stewardship processes as part of the Transfer Pricing & International Tax (TP&I Tax) team to ensure the group’s international tax related practices, positions and policies are robust and sustainable.  The accountabilities of this role include the following:

  • Assist with the undertaking, co-ordination and management of international tax issues within the APAC region, including positions relating to Australia’s controlled foreign companies rules, thin capitalisation rules, various withholding taxes and taxes emanating from other cross-border transactions
  • Contribute to the design and testing of appropriate measures to monitor, assess and control tax risk relating to international tax issues
  • Support the Manager TP&I, others within the TP&I and BHP’s global Tax teams to ensure consistent approaches and positions are adopted and to manage the delivery of tax advice and execution of tax processes to provide best practice service and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide advice on complex international tax issues, providing technical analysis and guidance and ensuring tax risks and opportunities are consistently understood and applied
  • Make recommendations about the suitability of tax positions for BHP businesses, transactions, projects and mergers or acquisitions as relevant to international tax issues
  • Assist with engagements with governments, revenue authorities and the OECD in relation to international tax policy developments
  • Be accountable for the accuracy and completeness of tax advice, data and analysis provided to stakeholders within and outside BHP’s Tax function, ensuring that tax risks and opportunities are identified, quantified and incorporated in advice and tax return processes
  • Advise and assist on TP&I matters, and related matters, as required.

This role reports to the Manager TP&I Tax, based in Melbourne.

About You

To be in successful in the role, you will ideally have the following skills and experience:
  • At least 7 years of practical experience with corporate income tax and cross-border tax issues across compliance, provisioning and advice. You are most likely an ambitious tax manager in a Big 4, a senior associate in the tax function within a tier 1 law firm or from a large corporate looking to further your career in the industry
  • Practical experience with international tax issues (including Australia’s controlled foreign company rules, thin capitalisation rules, tax residency concepts, the application of double tax agreements, withholding taxes, and the cross-border procurement and sale of goods and services) in a commercial setting including dealing with the technical and practical interaction with other tax and commercial issues, ideally across multiple jurisdictions
  • Experience in implementing tax processes and projects, including transactions, systems and processes
  • Tertiary level qualification in tax or relevant field
  • Experience in delivering tax advice for a marketing function would be an advantage
  • CA / CPA / Legal practising certificate would be an advantage
