About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

We are seeking a motivated professional to join our team as a Specialist in BHP’s Portfolio Strategy & Development (PS&D) team in our Houston Office. The PS&D function brings together investment and decision evaluation, business development, M&A and strategy work into one team. Resources within the PS&D team work in a ‘pool’ and move between areas, depending on priorities.

This particular role will exist in the pool, with a focus on Decision Evaluation activities, whose purpose is to lead evaluation activities across the Company so that the value of every business decision is clear. We achieve this by providing independent, robust and high quality evaluations of proposed investment opportunities, taking into account risk and uncertainty. To maximize our influence, we operate collaboratively and in a commercially astute way.

You will have a diverse background that may include consulting, investment banking, corporate finance, law or engineering experience.  Irrespective of background, you will be able to offer commercial insight, analytical expertise and strategic thinking and have strong communication skills.  An ability to lead in cross-functional team settings is a key dimension of the role as is the ability to influence upwards. The primary accountability is to create shareholder value by framing, evaluating and clearly communicating proposed investments to senior decision-makers.

Working either independently or in cross-functional project, planning or transaction teams, you will be required to influence and challenge thinking, prepare concisely written reports and clearly articulate outputs and insights to senior management and other key stakeholders.

About You

You will have successfully completed a technical or business related undergraduate degree and a broadening postgraduate qualification will be viewed favorably.  Experience within the resources, manufacturing or other capital intensive, process-driven industry would be an advantage. Leadership will be a key part of your background, including ability to influence without formal authority.

We value diversity in thinking and your career to date will testify to your ability to demonstrate strong critical reasoning skills, quickly grasp technical concepts and apply theories.  You will be able to demonstrate strong business acumen and have an understanding of the key drivers of shareholder value.  Experience with development of valuation models is essential as is strong quantitative capabilities.

Energetic and driven, you work well under pressure, bringing attention to detail and an ability to meet multiple and competing deadlines.

You are able to establish credibility through your strong technical ability and excellent communication skills.  You relate well with people with an engaging style allowing you to communicate confidently and build strong working relationships.

Supporting a diverse workforce

At BHP, we recognise that we are strengthened by diversity. We are committed to providing a work environment in which everyone is included, treated fairly and with respect. We are an Equal Opportunity employer and we encourage applications from women and Indigenous people. We know there are many aspects of our employees’ lives that are important, and work is only one of these, so we offer benefits to enable your work to fit with your life.  These benefits include flexible working options, a generous paid parental leave policy, other extended leave entitlements and parent rooms.
