Market Analysis & Economics is currently seeking an experienced Analyst to join their team. This role contributes to BHP’s global analysis of petroleum commodities, including short and long term price forecasting and advises the Petroleum TMU on commercial tactics and strategic considerations for the marketing and procurement of petroleum commodities. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5-8 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and a demonstrable track record in research and long term forecasting.

In this role you will:
  • Demonstrate and instill an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

  • Lead in positively influencing and shaping the culture to ensure a safe, sustainable and disciplined approach to work.
  • Provide thought leadership on petroleum industry trends and outlook and advice on commercial and strategic responses to these trends.
  • Build research and model infrastructure that uplifts the quality of insight as well as team and personal productivity.
  • Develop and maintain detailed bottom up and top down supply and demand model(s).
  • Provide specialist expertise to senior management as required.
  • Support Group Functions (primarily Investor Relations) where appropriate to help communicate the Group’s strategic views.
  • Work closely with others in the MAE team to understand developments in the integrated energy system.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships within external thought leaders.

About You

1st class Honors degree in a quantitative social science, data science or physical/engineering science discipline, with postgraduate qualification preferred.

Experience & Technical Competencies
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of experience as an energy economist or analyst gained within government, consultancy, finance or an IOC, with extended exposure to forecasting and commodity analysis.
  • Experience running, or contributing to, a global demand and supply model for liquids.
  • Strong knowledge of major demand regions and transport and non-transport sectors in these regions.
  • Advanced written, verbal and visual communication skills
  • Advanced excel modelling skills
  • Data science or econometrics proficiency an advantage.
  • Developed presentation skills and confidence when dealing with senior stakeholders.
  • A strong research network within the energy research community.
  • Fluent English, both verbal and written
  • Spanish or an Asian language an advantage
