Our Operations

Queensland Coal comprises the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC) assets in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. 

BMA is Australia’s largest coal producer and supplier of seaborne metallurgical coal. BMA is owned 50:50 by BHP and Mitsubishi Development. BMA operates seven Bowen Basin mines (Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji, Blackwater and Caval Ridge) and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay.

BMC owns and operates two open-cut metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen Basin – South Walker Creek Mine and Poitrel Mine. BMC is owned by BHP (80 per cent) and Mitsui and Co (20 per cent).

New South Wales Energy Coal consists of the Mt Arthur Coal open-cut energy coal mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The site produces coal for domestic and international customers in the energy sector. 

About the role

We are currently seeking a Specialist in Quality Management supporting our BHP Coal Assets as part of a diverse Quality team across Minerals Australia, providing specialist quality input to the project teams.

This position is a 12 month fixed term basis based in Brisbane with occasional site travel.

You will play a pivotal role in supporting the development and coordination of Quality Management strategy, standards, procedures, processes, systems and plans including quality planning and quality improvement for a program of capital projects. Committed to developing a culture driven by safety, quality and continuous improvement, your highly developed teamwork and interpersonal skills and an eye for detail will be central to success in the role.

Reporting to the Lead Quality in the Minerals Australia Projects Functions team your accountabilities will include:
  • Set out a focused, structured and well-timed implementation plan for the Quality framework as outlined in the Internal Standard and govern the process in alignment with its requirements 
  • Early project engagement with Study/Project Managers to ensure quality focus is applied through all phases and in all functional areas 
  • Review and endorse Company quality related documentation to ensure that quality management is fit for purpose to facilitate overall project quality performance
  • Coordinate the review of vendor data and monitors contractors ensuring that Quality Management data is delivered checked and incorporated in a timely manner
  • Monitor the development of the Quality Management plans in conjunction with the Project Managers to monitor schedule slippage minimize effects of this 
  • Coordinate execution of risk and quality management plans to assure effective management of the project's Quality Management scope of work
  • Identify and implement improvement initiatives, including programmatic opportunities for increased capital efficiency and productivity in the function
  • Provide Quality Management expertise as input to value improvement practices
  • Monitor the Project Quality Management Framework to ensure it meets the required standards 
  • Collaborate with Study\Project Manager to ensure fit for purpose processes and tools are available to achieve the project scope, cost and schedule requirements

Proactive, credible and influential, you relate well with people, communicating confidently and building strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
As the successful candidate, you will also possess the following:
  • Ability to engage and motivate others to drive continual improvement
  • Excellent writing skills built on previous Quality Management experience is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles and governance in Technical sub-functions of Quality
  • An understanding of and experience within the Resources sector is desirable 
  • Ability to inspire and educate around the importance of Quality awareness
  • Ability to work well under pressure and able to prioritise tasks in accordance with requirements
  • An autonomous working style with delivery focus
  • Sound understanding of ISO 9001 Principles
  • Lead Auditor qualifications highly regarded
