About the role

We are currently seeking applicants for the role of Specialist Site Improvement. This is an exciting opportunity to support continuous improvement at BMC’s South Walker Creek Mine, QLD.

BMC owns and operates two open-cut metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen Basin - South Walker Creek Mine and Poitrel Mine. BMC is owned by BHP (80 per cent) and Mitsui and Co (20 per cent).

The Specialist Site Improvement, reporting to the Superintendent Site Improvement, will be responsible for the successful execution of improvement projects at South Walker Creek. This is a small but high performing team, responsible for leading change and improvement which materially shifts the dial on South Walker Creek’s performance. The Specialist Site Improvement will identify and execute projects designed to unlock value and reduce waste through embedding continuous improvement deep into our culture. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Ensuring conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations;
  • Demonstrate an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development;
  • Identifying, framing, scheduling and managing key improvement projects, spanning across all departments in safety, culture, cost and throughput;
  • Coaching in continuous improvement from the front-line through to leadership;
  • Supporting the Superintendent Site Improvement and teams at South Walker Creek to embed Continuous Improvement routines and management of their initiative portfolios;
  • Training and coaching in WAVE for new users;Reporting and other tasks as directed
Location

South Walker Creek Mine is located on the eastern flank of the Bowen Basin, 35 kilometres west of the town of Nebo and 132 kilometres west of the Hay Point port facilities, and offers the unique benefit of the options to either live locally (within 125km of mine) or a Brisbane/Cairns based lifestyle, whilst working in the Bowen Basin on an attractive 8/6. Accommodation and meals are provided at a modern accommodation village located close to the mine.


About You

The behavioural qualities you exhibit in this role will be critical to set the expectation to all employees at site to ensure the timely delivery of improvement projects. Therefore, you must be passionate and have high energy levels, to ensure that together we are improving South Walker Creek every day.

You will possess the following:
  • 'Safety first' as an uncompromised core value;
  • Constant demonstration of the BHP charter values and the ability to remain honest and transparent when reporting progress;
  • Self-motivated, reliable and driven, with a bias towards action;
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, flexibility and willingness to see projects through to completion;

  • The ability to work autonomously and to be able to grasp new skills;
  • The ability to deal with ambiguity and the complexities posed by a complex organisation and supply chain;
  • Minimum of C class manual driver’s license;
  • Your skills in influencing, problem solving and facilitation, along with the ability to challenge existing thinking will play a key part in this role.
You will possess a demonstrated strength in at least three, but not necessarily all, of the following areas:
  • Understanding of the BOS, Theory of Constraints, Toyota Production Systems or Lean concepts and application;
  • Prior experience in portfolio and project management (full lifecycle) or supply chain improvement projects;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to clearly tailor complex information and deliver key messages into an easy-to-understand format;
  • Ability to use simple statistical and graphical tools such as pareto analysis;
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and synthesis skills;
  • Budgeting and finance skills;
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project;
  • SAP experience is desirable;
  • Plant and operations experience desired but not essential;
  • University degree in one of the following disciplines; Engineering, Operations Research, Business, Science, Finance, Commerce (or similar) would be advantageous but not essential.
