About the Opportunity

The Specialist Canada Tax focuses on Canada direct tax matters including strategic planning and oversight of tax reporting and compliance activities.  This role is part of a collaborative global team working across all parts of the tax life cycle.  This includes tax accounting, direct tax compliance, external reporting requirements, and tax planning.

  • Manager Tax Americas (International & Growth) 
  • Principal Tax Americas (International - Canada)
  • Global Tax counterparts (Americas and KL)
  • Global Accounting and Reporting Finance teams
  • Other Global Functional Teams (i.e. Finance, Marketing, Portfolio Strategy & Development) 

Required experience / remit:
  • Demonstrating and instilling an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development
  • Conforming with the BHP Charter, Our Requirements (Group Level Documents), Code of Business Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Ensuring compliance and commitment to BHP Tax Principles and tax obligations
  • Apply the Tax Risk Standard in all tax advice or responses provided to customers, other group functions or external
  • Identifying continuous, sustainable improvement and simplification opportunities in work area
  • Preparing and where necessary, reviewing, complex tax calculations, performing modelling, and analytics for tax compliance, reporting, and planning projects
  • Performing tax research and monitoring new legislation to identify developments relevant to the company
  • Identifying, researching and documenting tax risks, mitigations, and proposals to provide effective tax advice on business activities
  • Reviewing and researching tax outcomes of proposed purchase/sale/exchange or other restructuring transactions and review of tax language in contracts 
  • Reviewing Canada income tax returns 
  • Reviewing income tax provision calculations and reconciliations to ensure accurate tax balances are reported in the financial statements
  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders globally within tax and finance to ensure tax implications of transactions are properly managed and accounted

About You

About you
  • Bachelor’s degree qualification in accounting or finance 
  • Professional qualification (CPA, Bar member) or similar tax qualifications, either completion or currently pursuing will be added advantage
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the provision of tax advisory, reporting, and compliance service processes in a multinational business and/or professional services firm
  • Demonstrated experience in researching, interpreting and concluding on moderate to complex tax matters, and providing thorough and accurate tax advice (both written and verbal) to relevant stakeholders is an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering high quality tax reporting and tax compliance processes, including preparation of complex calculations, effective review of work product prepared by others and analysis/interpretation of key metrics would be beneficial
  • Demonstrated experience engaging effectively with multiple stakeholders both within and outside of Tax would be advantageous 
  • Working knowledge of SAP, OneSource Tax Provision software a plus
  • Strong MS Office software skills are required
  • Oil & gas or mining industry experience a plus, but not required
