About the role

Do you want to play an active role in shaping a global business by identifying and optimising scope for large projects?

A great opportunity has become available for project management individuals to join BHP Asset Projects Study team, based in Adelaide.  With an extensive pipeline of diverse projects, this is an exciting time to join our team.  

Our team completes front end development studies for projects ranging from $20M to $250M and sets up projects for success in Construction/Execution Phase. 

Bring your expertise in projects where you will be supporting studies in at Olympic Dam that could include Surface, Mine Sustaining, Whenan Shaft, Waste & Closure or Infrastructure. The Study Lead manages a portfolio of feasibility studies by leading and coaching a team of Study Specialists and a multidisciplinary functional support team.


This position is based in Adelaide with options for flexible working.


In this role you will:
  • Lead and mentor a small team of project management Study Specialist(s), overseeing a portfolio of studies in Identification, Selection and Definition Phase
  • Manage consultants and a functional support team, consisting of experts from technical backgrounds, cost & schedule estimating, contracts & procurement and investment evaluation
  • Engage senior operational stakeholders to develop and challenge project requirements
  • Coach your team to maximise project value by identifying options through creative thinking processes
  • Oversee trade-off studies, supported by multi-criteria analysis and investment evaluation
  • Present recommendations to senior management on major project decisions, including advancing projects to the next phase
  • Prepare and review study management documentation including study work plans, end of phase reports, key value drivers and investment approval requests
  • Monitor and report your portfolio’s adherence to work plans, schedule and budgets
  • Ensure projects are setup for successful Execution by: determining the appropriate Execution Strategy; managing risks well; complying with requirements; and maximising safety & constructability through design
  • Liaise with Projects teams across BHP to provide expertise and continual improvement in the delivery of studies

About You

  • Experience in project/study management
  • Demonstrated leadership of teams comprised of direct and indirect reports
  • Ability to manage contractors to meet scope, costs and schedule.
  • Understanding and successful implementation of change management and management of change
  • Ability to identify Value Improvement initiatives
  • Organisational skills for managing multiple team members, stakeholders and tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated technical and commercial acumen with advanced problem solving skills
  • High level communication and influencing skills, including the ability to produce quality, concise reports and presentations to senior executives
  • Degree qualified in project management, engineering or finance related disciplines is desired, but not essential
