About the role


Reporting directly to the General Manager Port, the Superintendent Site Improvement will be responsible for the governance and outcomes of the improvement projects conducted by the Site Improvement team at Port.
This is a small but high performance team, responsible for leading change and improvement at Port. The Superintendent Site Improvement will be a member of the Port Leadership Team and will have the opportunity to oversee and execute projects designed to unlock value and reduce waste through embedding continuous improvement deep into our culture at Port. Some of your responsibilities will include:
  • Driving a  clear focus on Safety Leadership
  • Development and coordination of the Five Year Plan and Annual Plan for Port, managing stakeholder relationships and enhancing our communications both within the Port operations and across BHP
  • Responsible for the pipeline of improvement projects at Port, leading the identification, development and delivery of improvement projects that are linked to Key Value Drivers to meet business objectives
  • Chairperson for the weekly Port Improvement routine (BOS Projects Board)
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and training of colleagues and leaders in continuous improvement mindset, methodology and tools
  • Actively work with the leadership team’s mindsets to create and allow breakthrough solutions 

Location
In this residential role on a 5/2 roster, you will be based in the coastal town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia. The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities.

A fly in fly out option may be available if required for the successful applicant.

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife. Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini national Park. As this is a residential position, you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies.

About You

The behavioural qualities you exhibit in this role will be critical to set the expectation to all employees at Port to ensure the timely delivery of improvement projects. Therefore, you will be passionate and have high energy levels, to ensure that together we are improving Port everyday.
To be successful you will ideally  possess the following:
  • 'Safety first' is a passion as a core value
  • Proven leadership and team management skills in order to drive a team of professionals
  • Proven ability and experience to generate and develop the pipeline of improvement projects required by Port to achieve our strategic plans, with the high bias towards action to execute these on-time and in-full
  • The ability to hold others to account and demonstrate the values of honesty and transparency, as well as being a team player
  • Strong public speaking, written, facilitation and influencing skills with ability to communicate effectively at different levels
  • Understanding of lean principles is an advantage
  • Minimum of C class manual driver’s license
  •  Ability to think with an analytical mindset and problem solving skills
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Application such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project.
  • University degree in one of the following disciplines; Engineering, Operations Research, Business, Science, Finance, Commerce (or similar) would be advantageous
