About the role

Queensland Coal comprises the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC) assets in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia.

BMA is Australia’s largest coal producer and supplier of seaborne metallurgical coal. BMA is owned 50:50 by BHP and Mitsubishi Development. BMA operates seven Bowen Basin mines (Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji, Blackwater and Caval Ridge) and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay.

BMC owns and operates two open-cut metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen Basin – South Walker Creek Mine and Poitrel Mine. BMC is owned by BHP (80 per cent) and Mitsui and Co (20 per cent).

New South Wales Energy Coal consists of the Mt Arthur Coal open-cut energy coal mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The site produces coal for customers in the energy sector.

About the role – Superintendent Water Planning:

Reporting to the Manager Water Planning for BHP’s Coal assets, you will be responsible for ensuring water planning functions are delivered efficiently by managing the budget, quality, risks and timeliness of activities for a team of Water Planners and technical water specialists in our Brisbane offices. Whilst building strong relationships with your key stakeholders, ensuring their understanding of water risks and endorsement of proposed water management actions.

In this role you will also:
  • Provide team leadership in safety, performance, culture and professional development; 
  • Provide hydrological, hydrogeological, water operational and water stewardship direction & input to water infrastructure designs, mine plans, mine development studies, environmental assessments, closure plans, water related risk management and capital projects;
  • Improve and maintain systems and processes for water data collection, storage, modelling, analysis,  use and reporting, in partnership with other functional and site groups;
  • Design hydrological and hydrogeological, hydraulic, and catchment management field investigations and desktop studies;
  • Lead operational water management planning;
  • Take responsibility for water related regulatory reporting;
  • Develop and improve operating frameworks  (including processes, accountabilities, and work planning and tracking) for the work of the team;
  • Ensure that the team’s outputs have the right standard for their intended use; and
  • Lead Inclusive and Diversity initiatives that you are passionate to drive.

About You

You will be highly experienced in management and delivery of Water Resource Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or Hydraulic Engineering services. Your proven experience in leading a team of professionals to achieve business outcomes along with coaching abilities to develop their technical and business skills will set you up for success.

You will come with advanced water management skills, preferably in a mining environment together with sound knowledge of water policy and regulation in both Qld and NSW. Your strong interpersonal skills are key  to allow you to influence while also enabling you to build relationships across departments and to communicate with a wide range of technical and mine operational disciplines, at all levels.
