About the role

As a Supervisor for Fixed Plant Maintenance/Processing, you will provide supervision and leadership to a team of Fixed Plant operators and tradespeople and be responsible for the safe production of iron ore within Newman Operations’ Fixed Plant West team.  

Your team will operate and maintain our Car Dumper, Crushing and Screening Buildings, Stockyard (including stackers and reclaimer), Train Load Out and all associated conveyors and ancillary equipment. 
Reporting to the Superintendent Outflow - Fixed Plant, your duties will include; 
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • An overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Carry out responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner ensuring compliance with the BHPBIO Safety System.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of Material Risks and ensure controls are in place, including the verification of all Safe Systems of Work for Outflow.
  • Ensure a Safe System of Work is in place for each activity and all direct reports are appropriately aware of SHE systems and processes.
  • As a Section 44 Appointed Person, you are required to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Mine Safety and Inspection Act and Mines Safety Inspection Regulations in accordance with your appointment.
  • Liaise with Scheduling, Plant Control and Mining Production to ensure plans are executed appropriately.
  • Provide input into production strategies, budgets, and plans as well as the improvement of work management processes.
  • Cultivate positive relationships through effective communication and consultation.
  • Monitor compliance against HSEC policies, procedures and systems through quality Field Leadership.
  • Positively influence and shape the culture to ensure a safe, productive, quality, sustainable, disciplined and controlled approach to work. 


In this residential role, you will be based in Newman, Western Australia. You will be working at the closely located ‘Mount Whaleback’ mine site, which at more than five kilometres long and nearly 1.5 kilometres wide is the biggest single-pit open-cut iron ore mine in the world. 

The 7,000 strong population of Newman enjoys well-established town facilities including a newly revitalised town centre and sporting facilities.  As a gateway to the Karijini national park, you will be in close proximity to spectacular gorges, watercourses and stunningly unique landscapes. As this is a residential position, you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies.

About You

As the successful candidate, you will possess the following;
  • Trade/relevant qualification within an equivalent industry and/or organisational experience 
  • C class drivers’ licence
  • Experience in a Fixed Plant Processing Production facility essential
  • All required site statutory competencies as referenced in the site health and safety management system and/or BHP Iron Ore policy 
  • Diploma in Frontline Management and qualification in Six Sigma are desirable 
  • Strong technical experience within operations and maintenance in a mining business
  • Strong communication, negotiation, influencing and relationship management skills
  • Self-reliant contributor with distinctive proficiency in executing and supervising maintenance activities
