About the role

Port Hedland is home to our thriving Port and BHP’s highest volume of Fixed Plant Assets. This is an exciting role, responsible for leading a team managing breakdown maintenance work for our Car Dumpers, Reclaimers, Stackers and Shiploaders on site.  

With company housing provided and a family friendly sportsman roster, this is an ideal move for someone looking for a dynamic work environment where no two days are ever the same. You will lead a team of both BHP employees and contractors, with safety, work management and continuous improvement anchored as the focus for your position.  

In addition you will play a key role by:
  • Having an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development
  • As a Section 44 Appointed Person, you are required to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Mine Safety and Inspection Act and Mines Safety Inspection Regulations in accordance with your appointment
  • Operating within an established maintenance management system, your key focus will be to promote a high level of team interaction and coordination
  • Maintaining a high profile in the promotion of safe working conditions and practices to ensure a safe working environment
  • Taking responsibility for identifying and resolving problems, and for assessing the potential impact on production, plant and equipment
  • Monitoring and measuring standards of work and performance of team members
  • Leading and coaching team members in the active pursuit and achievement of maintenance and productivity targets
  • Liaising with planners with the development of daily, weekly, monthly plans
  • Assisting with the development of the two year budget and 5 year capital maintenance plan
  • Conducting workplace area inspections both within your areas of responsibility and across other areas
  • Reviewing ongoing planning activities with the aim of continuously improving equipment availability and reliability

About You

As the successful candidate, it’s likely you will: 
  • Offer a Trade Qualification – preferably Electrical 
  • Offer strong leadership skills gained in a Supervisory or Superintendent level position 
  • Have the ability to drive high standards of performance within your team 
  • Bring mining industry experience and fixed plant in particular (beneficial)
  • Offer strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to form strong working relationships with your team 
  • C Class drivers licence 


In this residential role you will be based in the coastal town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia.  The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities. 

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife.  Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini national Park.
