About the role

The Technical Maritime Executive provides maritime technical expertise, ensures that optimal maritime solutions are delivered to the business, and all maritime operations are conducted in accordance with organisational and industry requirements and BHP’s reputation is protected.



Accountabilities include:

  • Provide maritime technical advice and support in respect of port, terminal and vessel/shore compatibility information.

  • Shore team advisory act as vessel/shore interface.

  • Provide technical advice and constraints in modelling, optimisation, strategy, chartering, operations and contracting.

  • Cargo quantity and quality survey techniques, and expertise in handling of dangerous goods.

  • Promote relationships with relevant industry bodies to share best practices, positively influence implementation of safety standards and provide information to the business on initiatives, standards and regulations.

  • Provide data support and management information to regular forums, i.e. Monthly operations meeting.

  • Collaborate with the business on definition and alignment of product research and testing strategies.

  • Participation in studies and research that involve commodities that are or will be shipped by BHP. Provide technical response to study/research and evaluate outcome impacts on BHP portfolio.

  • Support industry led research projects with maritime consultancies and universities in the area of renewable fuels and emission reduction.

  • Support the path to compliance with IMO regulations.



About You

A background in naval engineering or naval architecture would be highly regarded, along with:



  • Vessel technology (PMS, mooring, engine, etc.)

  • Port and terminal systems and technology (loading, unloading, etc.)

  • Emerging technologies, i.e. AI, IoT, distributed ledger application in Maritime

  • Shipping value chain systems and process design

  • Maritime code and regulation compliance obligations
