About the role

BHP currently produces oil and gas from the Greater Angostura field, located in shallow water 40 kilometers off the east coast of Trinidad. The Ruby project (a major brownfield expansion, currently in execution) will add significantly to this existing position when it comes online in 2021.

BHP also holds a significant deepwater acreage position in Trinidad & Tobago and has previously announced the discovery of substantial gas resources in the northern licenses where multiple development concepts are under evaluation ahead of an expected final investment decision in 2024.

About the role

The Field Manager is responsible for delivering safe and efficient operations in compliance with regulations, and in accordance with company policies and procedures. 

Based in the office, the Field Manager leads the site-based Operations team, which includes approximately 60 BHP staff and 100 contract personnel working across offshore and onshore sites at any point in time.

The position reports to the Operations Manager for the Trinidad and Tobago Production Unit (TTPU) and will interface frequently with the HSE, Engineering, Subsurface and Project Delivery teams along with support functions including Finance, Supply, Corporate Affairs, Technology and HR.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring the quality and effectiveness of the first line of defense HSE Assurance plan.
  • Ensuring that risk management requirements are met such that relevant safety and business risks are appropriately addressed and controls effective.
  • Serving as an Incident Commander on the Incident Management Team (IMT) for emergency response.
  • Leading the site-based Operations team to oversee all Production and Maintenance execution activities.
  • Establishing and delivering safety, production and cost targets.
  • Ensuring appropriate resourcing, capability development, competency assessment and succession planning for the site team.
  • Establishing a work environment that enables personnel to contribute and collaborate effectively.
  • Overseeing budgeting, forecasting and cost management for Operations Cost Centers.
  • Serving as owner for key Operations support contracts.
  • Implementing the BHP Operating System (BOS) to drive continuous improvement in systems, processes and results.
  • Networking with Field Managers in other Production Units to share best practice and support Petroleum-level improvements.

About You

Given the breadth of the role – technical, operational and interdepartmental – the role will require someone with demonstrated competencies across several domains. As such, the ideal candidate would come from an operations or engineering background, with a minimum 10 years’ experience and prior leadership roles in an upstream oil & gas environment.  As the role looks after a large team and interfaces with other teams across the full business, prior experience leading large, complex teams will be important.

  • Upstream Oil & Gas operations management.
  • Technical knowledge of offshore and onshore oil and gas production facility operations and maintenance that you can leverage to manage risk and solve complex technical problems.
  • Broad managerial, organizational, planning and reporting skills.
  • Ownership of material risks and a deep understanding of control verification activities.
  • Experience in Emergency Response and understanding of the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Experience in influencing all directions through working with peers, Functions, Regulatory Authorities, and third party or external stakeholders.
  • People leadership experience in building teams, engaging large workforces and building a culture of care and trust, encouraging collaboration to work as “one-team”.
  • Ability to build an inclusive culture and integrate across teams internally and externally.
  • Performance management, coaching and mentoring of individual contributors and supervisors including providing recognition and constructive feedback.
  • Degree qualified in a technical discipline.
