About the role

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s leading suppliers of iron ore. The Company’s operations currently involve an integrated system of seven inland mines, more than 1,000 kilometres of rail and two separate port facilities; Nelson Point and Finucane Island at Port Hedland as part of our Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) business. Reporting to the Water Quality Compliance Supervisor (whom shares the same passion and values), within the Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) team you will be responsible for co-ordinating potable water quality monitoring, compliance, data analysis, and technical support to the all WAIO operational sites.

A Water program of works will require your support to updating the Drinking Water Quality Management System (DWQMS) that meets the objectives of the ADWG 12 Element Framework.

Additional duties will include:
  • Provide the technical support to enable the NPI water services team to meet its objectives set out in the specific (WAIO) drinking water quality standard and the requirements set by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG). 
  • Constructively provide support to the Water Quality Compliance Supervisor as the WAIO interface with external government regulators and drive change within the business in relation to understanding and compliance to ADWG. 
  • Work with NPI Water Quality Compliance Supervisor, Water Services Support team and external contractors to deliver a complete and functional Drinking Water Quality Management System (DWQMS) that meets the objectives of the ADWG 12 Element Framework. 
  • Work with NPI Water Quality Compliance Supervisor, Water Services Support team and external contractors to develop new management systems focused on non-potable and waste water system risk based controls. 
  • Manage WAIO water quality risk assessments for the NPI Water Quality Compliance Supervisor and Superintendent Water.
With this role there is flexibility in roster with the option of working from the Perth Head Office on a standard 5-2 roster. The Perth Head Office is located at 125 St Georges Terrace and boasts great views of the Swan River and Perth surrounds. Regular site travel within the various WAIO sites will be required in both circumstances.

About You

As the successful candidate you will ideally possess some of the following or be interested in developing the following:
  • University degree in either environmental science, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemical science or equivalent in a related field;
  • Strong water quality experience and knowledge in drinking water
  • Experience and knowledge in wastewater systems and processes will be regarded as an advantage;
  • Sound knowledge of water chemistry and microbiology specifically health aspects of water quality;
  • 5-10 years post university experience in water, or heavy industry environment (in Australia) that has previously managed water in accordance with the ADWG;
  • Previous experience with external government regulators would be preferred.
