About the Role

This role is required to provide state-level leadership on government, community relations and Traditional Owner issues regarding BHP’s Olympic Dam Asset. 

The role will also provide indirect leadership and support to the regional Communications Team to ensure a consistent approach to communications and stakeholder engagement, as well as an alignment to the broader company strategy.

This role is based full time in Adelaide, with some domestic travel a requirement of the role.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Provide guidance to Asset President and Asset Leadership Team on Corporate Affairs risk and relevant mitigating actions.
  •  Develop a sound understanding of existing and emerging issues and provide advice and input to Business on issues management and co-ordinate Asset input to the Company-wide issues management process.
  • Provide Corporate Affairs input into the Asset and Business five year plan.
  • Provide leadership and direction on engagement with government and input to the development of public policy positions within the jurisdiction for which the office has primary and designated accountability.
  • Working closely with the Minerals Australia Indigenous Engagement Native Title team and providing leadership and direction on engagement with Traditional Owners groups and local leaders
  • Lead the Asset community engagement and development processes so as to minimise adverse social and human rights impacts arising from company activities, develop mutually beneficial relationships with host communities and contribute to the economic and social development of the communities surrounding the Asset.
  • Support the internal and external communications plans of the Asset and associated communication materials and tools.
  • Manage positioning with key stakeholders in alignment with Business and Company-wide objectives.
  • In conjunction with the communications team, lead the co-ordination of Asset communications so to ensure the Company position is understood and appreciated by key stakeholders and communications channels and tools are optimized.
  • Strengthen culture and building capability through management of a diverse and remote team.


About You

To be successful in this role, you will be an established and proven Corporate Affairs professional who brings demonstrated experience at a leadership level within a similar, complex environment.

You will have:
  • Experience advising business leaders at a senior level and leading communications, public relations, public and government affairs and community relations
  • Knowledge of the political and economic environment and policy making structures of Australia with a particular focus on SA, Queensland and NSW.
  • Well-developed issues management skills.
  • Working exposure of political and socio-economic risk assessment and strategy development techniques.
  • Experience working within a complex matrix structure, with demonstrated experience implementing group strategies at a business unit level.
  • Experience in a broad range of corporate affairs competencies, particularly government relations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to align regional or business unit specific strategies and tactics with a global, company-wide corporate affairs strategy.


The successful candidate will ideally have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as Business, Commerce, Public Administration, Economics, Law or Communications (or equivalent demonstrated experience) and will have a strong technical knowledge on government, community relations and communications.
