About the location 


Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) is an integrated system of four processing hubs and five mines connected by more than 1,000 kilometres of rail infrastructure and port facilities in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia


About the Role 


Reporting to the General Manager, this position is accountable for supporting the maturity of the BHP Operating System (BOS). Working with the Department Managers and Superintendents you will directly support the Operational lead team to leverage BOS in their area to deliver on company objectives across Safety, Culture, Quality & Performance.


BOS is a way of leading and working that makes improvement part of what we do every day and focuses on Serving Our Customers, Pursuing Operation Perfection and Empowering Our People.   Working either on a FIFO roster 5/2 4/3 or Residential 5/2.



Key Accountabilities 


  • Strategic leadership of Line Technical Specialists deploying capacity to meet required demand.
  • Enable a healthy and performing improvement engine at all levels within the operation, whilst focusing coaching activities at Manager to GM (L3 & L4).
  • Assist site leaders with the identification, prioritisation, problem solving and implementation of improvement and OEI gap closing actions.
  • Assist site leaders and conduct prioritised Kaizen / site breakthroughs at L4 (interdepartmental level).
  • Assist site leadership in the monitoring of BOS capability and local training required to maintain and continuously build BOS capability in all areas across the site.
  • Build the operational site teams’ ability to problem solve and continually improve their work off a base of Standardised Work (SW), replicating and sharing best practice within high impact repetitive maintenance activities and making frontline work safer, easier, better.
  • Enables growth and utilisation of Standardised Work within their operation.
  • Enables the core systems associated with the ‘improvement engine’ at site. Assisting operational teams access, use, and manage information in CoreWork, BrightSpot, MyBOS, SW Field App, SW Builder App, WAVE and KaiNexus.
  • Site coordination of and preparedness to support effective Operational Excellence Index (OEI) assessments.
  • Identifies, implements, and evaluates the success of continuous improvement activities/initiatives to improve the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of BHP systems and processes. 
  • Integrates resource planning across activities/projects considering the workload/priorities of multiple objectives and resources.
  • Engages the capabilities of the entire organisation. 
  • Strives to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste. 
  • Knows our customer and is obsessed with meeting their needs.



About You 


  • You have experience in business improvement, operational leadership or as a technical leader. 
  • Exposure to mining, maintenance or processing is ideal but experience in other industries that utilise an operating system founded on lean principles would be highly regarded (e.g. manufacturing, health, finance, logistics, etc.) 
  • You will have an understanding/exposure to continuous improvement methodologies and organisational change. 
  • You will be able to establish credibility as a trusted advisor and through your strong improvement, leadership, coaching and communication skills. 
  • You will be comfortable with ambiguity, complexity and delivering outcomes in a matrix environment using your collaboration, engagement, influence, and coaching skills.
