About the Role

 

Prominent Hill is a copper–gold mine and a long‑life asset within BHP’s South Australia Copper Province. BHP is a global resources company with operations across Australia and the Americas, producing five key commodities.

 

Reporting to the Lead Backfill Engineer, this role sits within the Technical Services department and provides specialist technical support to underground backfilling systems at Prominent Hill. You will play a key role supporting Paste Fill and Rockfill operations, including backfill strategy, reticulation design, stope design interaction, and backfill performance optimisation.

 

This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your technical expertise in backfill engineering within a collaborative, safety‑focused Technical Services environment.

 

 

The position is based at Prominent Hill on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Adelaide or Port Augusta.

 

In this role you will:

 

  • Reviewing and optimising paste fill mix designs based on exposure stability requirements and stope performance
  • Monitoring backfill performance, including strength testing, QA/QC results, and stope reconciliations
  • Providing technical input and governance for Paste Fill and Rockfill systems
  • Design, review, and optimisation of paste fill reticulation systems, including layout, operating pressures, and capacity considerations
  • Undertaking and reviewing paste fill flow modelling to support system performance, debottlenecking, and future planning
  • Developing, reviewing, and maintaining backfill procedures, standards, and technical documentation
  • Supporting investigations, risk assessments, and change management processes related to backfill systems
  • Identifying capability gaps and implementing continuous improvement initiatives
  • Compiling technical reports and providing expertise to support production performance analysis and business planning
  • Collaborating with Geotechnical, Mine Planning, and Operations teams to ensure safe, effective backfill design and execution

About You

 

  • A tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience with underground mining backfill roles, Paste Fill and/or Rockfill systems, including reticulation design or flow modelling, is highly regarded
  • Familiarity with mining software (e.g. Deswik)
  • Demonstrated experience in an underground or technical mining engineering role
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capability with a systems‑based approach
  • Proven ability to influence outcomes and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Clear and effective communication skills, with confidence engaging both technical and operational stakeholders
  • A proactive mindset with a strong focus on safety, technical assurance, and continuous improvement
