The challenge ahead of you
At Spence | BHP, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of fixed-plant control systems. In this position, you will execute and continuously enhance the implementation of maintenance and development strategies for control systems, supporting operational continuity and driving ongoing system improvement. You will also contribute to a strong safety culture aligned with BHP’s purpose and values, helping create safe, reliable, and productive outcomes across our operations.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Control Systems Engineer, you will:
Identify and assess risks, making informed decisions based on BHP standards and risk management practices to strengthen safe and productive outcomes aligned with production plans.
Execute strategies that support the development of capabilities and skills within the team while reinforcing BHP’s values and purpose.
Ensure the implementation and execution of the Control Systems Strategic Plan through tactical planning that supports system performance and effective short- and medium-term decision-making.
Manage the control systems support and maintenance model, mitigating material risks and failures that may affect operational continuity.
Ensure compliance with key management KPIs in alignment with BHP’s operating system.
Coordinate and support improvement initiatives related to control systems, ensuring alignment with area objectives and stakeholder expectations.
Implement lifecycle management strategies for control systems, ensuring high service availability.
Support the Service Owner function for control systems, including service continuity, vulnerability management, and maintenance activities.
Participate in engagement routines with key stakeholders to ensure continuity across the company’s value chain.
Provide technical and operational support to operational and functional areas.
What we expect from you
To succeed in this role, you will have:
A university degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Control, or a related discipline.
At least 5 years of experience in control systems operation and maintenance activities.
At least 3 years of proven experience in mining operations.
Knowledge of Honeywell, Siemens, and Rockwell control systems.
Experience with Fieldbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus TCP industrial networks.
Understanding of P&ID, SLD, PFD, and technical specifications.
Preferred qualifications include:
Knowledge of copper production processes, including concentrator and hydrometallurgical operations.
Understanding of cybersecurity best practices.
A strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and risk mitigation.
