About the Role
Prominent Hill is a copper-gold mine, a long-life asset, that is part of the BHP South Australia copper province. BHP is a global company with operations in Australia, North and South America across 5 different commodities.
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will play a key role in providing geotechnical input in stope designs, ground support assessments and designs, QAQC of ground support and geotechnical monitoring and ultimately enabling safe execution of mine plans.
This role is based at Prominent Hill on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Adelaide.
In this role you will;
- Undertake day-to-day underground inspections and ground support recommendations
- Manage and interpret geotechnical monitoring data
- Provide timely geotechnical input into short and long-term mine planning
- Geotechnical hazard management through critical control verifications and monthly audits
- Prepare and maintain risk assessments and trigger action response plans (TARPs)
- Liaise with Technical Service, Mine Operations, and external consultants
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of geotechnical practices and systems
- Lead and manage underground geotechnical projects, ensuring timelines, budgets and quality standard are met
- Prepare technical reports, scopes of work, and business cases for geotechnical initiatives
About You
- Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience in underground mining geotechnical roles.
- Proven ability to manage small to medium geotechnical projects in a mining or construction setting
- Familiarity with mining, geotechnical design and monitoring software (e.g. Deswik, Rocscience suite, rockfall 3D, slide)
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and reporting skills
- A proactive, safety-first mindset and ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Previous exposure to rock mass characterisation through empirical analysis, numerical modelling, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring methods (preferably but not essential)
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
