About the Role

 

At Western Australian Nickel you will find a diverse set of geotechnical challenges including deep, structurally complex mines and varied orebody geometries.

 

Our operations encompass a broad range of mining methods across both underground and surface settings, including block caving, sub-level caving, bench stoping, and large-scale open pit mining.

 

This role sits within the greater Western Australian Nickel, Northern Operations Technical Services team and reports to the Superintendent of Technical Services.

 

During the current period of temporary suspension (care and maintenance), you will be responsible for delivering both open pit and underground geotechnical services to the business. Key accountabilities include open pit geotechnical inspections, slope stability monitoring, ground control hazard identification and management, as well as underground inspections, monitoring, and the preparation and issuance of rehabilitation plans.

 

Depending on future business decisions this role will be well positioned to play a critical part in supporting the safe and efficient re-establishment of production for the Leinster and Mount Keith operations.  

 

In addition, the role will support the ongoing improvement of geotechnical engineering systems through effective collaboration with internal stakeholders across operations, planning, and technical services. This varied scope of work will allow you to contribute to informed business decisions and will require a strong focus on practical value delivery, sound engineering judgement, technical competence, and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

About You

The ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and organisational levels to create buy-in and influence outcomes will be highly regarded.  A passion for continuous improvement will contribute to the identification, development and implementation of improvement opportunities.

 

Required:

 

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering and / or Geoscience, or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years geotechnical engineering experience. (Open Pit and Underground Preferred)

 

Desirable:

 

  • Resource industry and site based geotechnical experience
  • Geotechnical Open Cut Mine design experience
  • Geotechnical Underground Mine design experience
  • Experience with Seismic monitoring systems such as IMS
  • Experience with total station Slope monitoring systems
  • Capability with a Mining CAD package (such as Deswik)
  • Capability with geotechnical engineering analysis software

Location

 

Western Australian Nickel Mt Keith and Leinster are located 460 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie in the Northern Goldfields. Mt Keith is a surface mining operation with multiple open pits and a concentrator plant. Leinster  is a underground and open cut mining operation with multiple open pits and a concentrator plant. 

 

The operation is surrounded by pastoral stations, with the nearest townships being Leinster and Wiluna.  There’s plenty to keep you entertained in the Leinster Village. Take the heat off the day and head to the pool – or join in any number of social activities. Employees commute to and from Perth on a fly in / fly out roster or form regional areas on a drive in / drive out roster.
