About the Role
BHP Exploration plays an important role in building a resilient long-term portfolio of assets for BHP. We seek to add high-quality Tier 1 copper assets through global greenfields exploration that supports early-stage entry and acquisition options for the company.
We are searching for a practical and experienced Lead Principal Exploration Geochemist to work within the Exploration Excellence and Innovation department providing technical leadership to the global exploration teams based in Tucson, Santiago, Lima, London, Perth and Adelaide.
The Lead Principal Geochemist will define best-practice applied exploration geochemistry and influence the effective acquisition, interpretation, and integration of geochemical data into geologymulti-disciplinary geoscience models across a range of porphyry and sediment-hosted copper exploration projects. The Lead Principal will effectively link applied exploration geochemistry practices to mineral systems frameworks for these key deposit styles across the world and build capability in our exploration teams through influential mentoring, coaching and proactive technical leadership.
As Lead Principal Geochemist your key accountabilities will include:
- Working along-side similar disciplinary experts in the Exploration Excellence and Innovation team to drive critical thinking in Mineral Systems science and exploration.
- Developing and driving forward best-practice applied geochemistry and geochronology techniques.
- Working collaboratively with BHP’s Geoscience Centre of Excellence to support geoscience excellence across BHP.
- Contribute to building a high-quality resilient exploration portfolio of opportunities by playing an integral role in the technical assurance of investment opportunities
- Working along-side partners in the Exploration Excellence and Innovation team to contribute to the development and execution of an applied research and innovation roadmap developing a competitive advantage in exploration techniques.
The role can be based from the Exploration offices in Toronto, Tucson, Perth or Adelaide.
About You
The successful Lead Principal Geochemist for BHP Exploration will demonstrate a culture of care that encourages an environment that is safe to speak up and be heard and ensure the whole team contributes to growth. This foundational quality, combined with a depth and breadth of experience in applied geochemistry across the minerals and mining industry will allow you to become a global technical leader in BHP Exploration. To complement this the ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- A degree in Geosciences or Chemistry from a reputable university, preferably with post graduate qualification.
- A track record of designing and executing exploration projects that have contributed to successful exploration a mineral discovery.
- An ability to teach, coach and mentor in best practice geochemistry and closely related disciplines.
- Communicate and share the application of your science expertise in the context of copper mineral systems and how it may be used to derisk investment opportunities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills at a variety of levels in an organisation to enable coaching the next generation of scientists as well as translating your science to corporate.
- Involvement in innovation and research to deliver breakthrough knowledge is desirable.
- Experience in working in diverse geographical regions and cultures is highly desirable.
