Head of Health, Safety and Security (HSS) | BHP Chile

About the Role

Reporting to the Asset President Pampa Norte, the Head of HSS will lead a team of 5 to provide a unified HSS execution point for the asset, aligning with global best practices. This role supports improvement initiatives and builds line HSS capability through coaching, mentoring, and expert guidance. Success is measured by effective implementation of the BHP Operating System (BOS), leadership in managing emerging HSS risks, strong partnerships with leadership, achievement of HSS targets aligned with the 5-Year Plan, and excellence in contractor governance and service delivery. This is a global search based in Pampa Norte, Chile.

Key Accountabilities

• Ensure compliance with BHP’s Purpose, Charter, Code of Conduct, and legal requirements.
• Define and communicate the Pampa Norte HSS Strategy, supporting corporate planning and KPI cascades.
• Develop HSS capability within site and operations teams through coaching and advisory support.
• Implement HSS improvement initiatives as directed by Asset Leadership Team and Global HSS Function.
• Build capacity in HSS Business Partnering by mentoring Principals, Specialists, and Superintendents.
• Manage HSS data collection, reporting, and compliance with health, hygiene, environment, and rehabilitation standards.
• Oversee medical services, return-to-work cases, medical assessments, emergency response, and security.
• Maintain HSS management systems to ensure standards and certification compliance.
• Participate in governance and assurance audits of HSS systems.
• Foster effective relationships with line management, peers, and external regulatory bodies.
• Ensure field compliance with HSS licensing and budget adherence.

Fluency in both Spanish and English (written and oral) is essential. You demonstrate integrity, care, and create psychologically safe, team-oriented environments. Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Environmental Science, Health & Safety Management, Risk Management, Engineering, or related field; postgraduate degree preferred.
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English (written and oral).
• Proven experience building and leading high-performing teams and cultures in mining, HSS, or related sectors.
• Demonstrated confidence in safety leadership with accountability for self and others.
• Minimum 15 years’ relevant industry experience with deep knowledge of HSE risk management concepts and practices.
• At least 5 years’ management experience leading teams, establishing work plans, and delivering results through effective resource management.
• Experience executing technical HSS work and leading major change initiatives.
• Minimum 5 years’ operational experience in large mining operations or capital projects, including budget responsibility at team level.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, able to negotiate and influence senior internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and community groups.
