About the Role

 

We have an exciting opportunity to join a small team with a great culture, to do an engaging variety of high-value commercial contracting, strategic advisory, and improvement/innovation work, as part of BHP's global Legal function. 

 

This role is responsible for providing strategic commercial legal advice and driving innovation to support BHP’s global Legal team, as part of the Legal Services Team (LST).  

 

The role reports to the Manager – Legal Services Team, and is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  

 

  • Providing strategic legal advice and leading projects to support to BHP’s global Legal team and business stakeholders, including:
    • Supporting negotiation and drafting of material commercial contracts (Procurement, Marketing and other)
    • Advising on and responding to developments in key relevant areas of law;
    • Updating and maintaining BHP’s legal governance documents and standard contract suite;
    • Driving continuous improvement initiatives including developing and maintaining documents, standardised documentation, checklists and guidance materials to upskill the business on contract-related legal issues, and supporting knowledge management. 
  • Working with the Legal Operations function to lead and drive technology innovation in the Legal function, including leading innovation projects.
  • In this role there will be very frequent interactions with members of the Legal team globally, including senior leaders; as well as senior personnel in the Marketing and Procurement functions; and occasionally the GBS Leadership team. 
  • Providing strategic legal support to GBS in relation to Malaysian and Philippines legal issues.

About You

 

  • The role is for a commercial lawyer, minimum of 6+ years PQE, admitted to practice in Malaysia, and preferably with a law degree and qualification to practice from the UK or Australia. 
  • Must have strong experience in negotiating commercial contracts (goods, services, software, commodities - or relevant experience with M&A or finance contracting). Some experience in managing Legal improvement projects (process innovation/automation, internal guidance materials and templates) would be well regarded but is not critical. 
  • Candidate must be a great team player but able to work independently (including leading projects), have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong and pragmatic commercial judgement, and be an innovative thinker.
  • The role is based in Kuala Lumpur - occasional travel may be required.
