About the Role

 

The New Markets Delivery Office (NMDO) is responsible for driving step change improvement in BHP’s spend, savings and supplier ecosystem through the development of New Markets suppliers and commercial models.

 

 

The Lead, New Markets is a critical leadership role within the China Hub, responsible for driving adoption of New Markets opportunities across BHP's global operations and projects by combining deep technical understanding, commercial acumen and strong stakeholder leadership. The role leads an integrated team of 4-6 commercial and technical professionals and acts as the key interface between the China Hub, onshore Procurement teams, Assets, Projects and suppliers.

 

 

The role is accountable for translating China market opportunities into actionable sourcing insights, supplier development initiatives and commercial outcomes that deliver value, resilience and supply chain competitiveness for BHP.

 

 

The successful candidate will ideally have an engineering background combined with strong commercial capability and a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in complex international environments.

 

 

Lead a Strategic Value Stream

 

  • Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team of commercial and technical professionals, fostering a high-performance culture focused on collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear priorities, ways of working and performance expectations aligned to NMDO objectives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, inclusion, customer focus and operational excellence.

Drive Market Intelligence and New Markets Adoption

 

  • Lead development of actionable market intelligence across China to support operational, capital and project procurement strategies.
  • Translate supplier, industry, technology and market insights into opportunities that influence category strategy and sourcing decisions.
  • Partner closely with onshore Procurement teams and Asset stakeholders to understand business needs and proactively shape the New Markets pipeline.
  • Monitor market trends, emerging technologies, capacity changes, geopolitical developments and supplier movements to identify opportunities and risks.

 

 

Deliver Commercial Value

 

  • Lead the identification, development and execution of New Markets opportunities across multiple categories and value chains.
  • Support sourcing, supplier engagement and negotiation strategies through application of China market expertise and commercial insight.
  • Drive lowest total cost of ownership outcomes while balancing operational performance, risk, quality and supply resilience.
  • Influence commercial and sourcing decisions through evidence-based recommendations and market insights.

 

Lead Supplier Development and Strategic Relationships

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key suppliers, industry partners and relevant stakeholders across China.
  • Drive supplier capability development and alignment with BHP requirements, standards and performance expectations.
  • Support executive engagement with strategically important suppliers and help resolve complex issues and barriers to value delivery.
  • Leverage supplier innovation and market knowledge to create sustainable competitive advantage for BHP.

 

 

Integrate Technical and Commercial Decision Making

 

  • Ensure supplier solutions are technically fit for purpose, operationally practical and aligned with BHP standards.
  • Facilitate effective technical-commercial trade-off discussions to optimise decision quality and business outcomes.
  • Support early identification and mitigation of supply chain, technical, commercial, regulatory and execution risks.
  • Drive focus on operational performance, lifecycle value and long-term sustainability of sourcing decisions.

 

 

Stakeholder Leadership

 

  • Build trusted relationships with Procurement, Asset, Project and Functional leaders across BHP.
  • Influence senior stakeholders to drive alignment, informed decision making and adoption of New Markets initiatives.
  • Act as a bridge between China-based suppliers and global BHP stakeholders, reducing communication gaps and accelerating delivery outcomes.

About You

 

Experience

 

 

  • Experience in mining, engineering, procurement, supply chain, projects or related industries.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience leading multidisciplinary technical and commercial teams.
  • Experience working across global supply chains and international business environments.
  • Strong supplier engagement, supplier development and stakeholder management experience.
  • Experience supporting major capital projects, operational procurement, mining equipment, fixed plant or related categories preferred.

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Structural or related discipline.
  • Postgraduate commercial, business or supply chain qualifications beneficial but not essential.

 

 

Technical and Commercial Capability

 

  • Strong understanding of mining industry supply chains, supplier ecosystems and value chain dynamics.
  • Deep understanding of China supply markets and manufacturing capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret market intelligence and translate insights into commercial actions.
  • Strong commercial judgement with the ability to balance value, risk, operational performance and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Proven capability in supplier relationship management, sourcing strategy and negotiation.
