The challenge Ahead
The purpose of the Lead PMO role is to lead the delivery of portfolio performance reporting, analysis and insights across the Projects Vice Presidency, ensuring high-quality, integrated and decision-ready information that enables effective portfolio management and decision-making.
The role leads and coordinates the work of the PMO team, translating portfolio performance into clear deliverables, assuring the quality and consistency of outputs, and proactively identifying trends, risks and opportunities across the portfolio.
Through strong analytical judgement, effective performance storytelling and continuous improvement, the Lead PMO strengthens portfolio performance transparency and supports disciplined decision-making in line with the BHP Operating System (BOS).
Accountabilities with the biggest impact
• Lead the end-to-end delivery of portfolio performance reporting, analysis and insights, ensuring outputs are timely, accurate, integrated and decision-ready.
• Coordinate, prioritise and quality-assure the work of Specialist PMO(s), providing clear direction and ensuring effective delivery across reporting cycles.
• Consolidate and validate portfolio data from multiple sources, ensuring consistency, traceability and alignment with agreed KPI definitions and performance expectations.
• Review, challenge and interpret performance analysis to identify meaningful trends, emerging risks, opportunities and areas requiring management attention.
• Synthesize cross-project performance into clear, value-focused and forward-looking portfolio narratives that enable effective decision-making.
• Proactively manage reporting timelines, inputs, dependencies and stakeholder requirements, anticipating issues and minimising rework.
• Serves as the key interface for integrating regional projects into the global project community, working in collaboration with the Project Centre of Excellence to ensure that all key processes, tools, and other improvement/change initiatives are embedded across the project portfolio.
• Coach and develop PMO capability in analytics, performance storytelling, problem solving and executive-level communication.
• Partner with the Manager Portfolio Performance & Insights to develop high-quality analysis and materials for senior leadership.
• Drive continuous improvement of PMO processes, analytics, tools and ways of working, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, quality and value in line with BOS principles.
What we expect from you
Requirements
• Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Business, Finance, Project Management, or a related discipline.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to interpret complex information, identify patterns and distinguish material insights from reporting noise.
• Advanced English proficiency, with the ability to operate effectively in English across written and verbal communication, including senior leadership interactions and executive-level presentations.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships, align diverse perspectives, and drive outcomes across multiple levels of the organisation.
• Strong leadership capability, including prioritisation, coaching, constructive challenge and quality assurance of team outputs.
• Ability to translate complex performance information into concise, compelling and decision-oriented narratives.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence senior stakeholders.
• Proficiency in performance and analytics tools, including Power BI and Excel, with an understanding of portfolio data models and reporting architecture.
