Purpose


The Lead Principal Geophysics will define, implement and coach leading practices in geophysical techniques, interpretation, and integration with geology across BHP Exploration. The Lead Principal will also connect geophysics to mineral systems frameworks, provide technical governance, and advise programs globally to help unlock the next generation of discoveries. 

About the Role


To be successful in this role you will:

  • Lead mineral systems integration: Be a thought leader in linking geophysical techniques and outcomes to the mineral systems framework for the deposit styles we pursue, engaging closely with internal and external communities of practice.  
  • Shape the exploration portfolio: Champion the application of best practice applied geophysics across the global exploration portfolio by supporting technical peer review and influencing investment decisions that shape the portfolio.   
  • Set the standard for geophysics quality: Own technical standards and governance; ensure fit for purpose, quality driven programs; guide teams on tools, approaches, datasets and the application of data analytics to geophysical datasets.  
  • Develop people and partnerships: Mentor geoscientists, cultivate strategically important external relationships, and reinforce our Charter Values to influence discovery success.

Work Location


This position will be based in the BHP Exploration Head Office in Toronto, Canada. However, other Exploration office locations including Santiago, Chile and Perth, Australia will be considered.

About You

 

  • Extensive experience in designing, executing and delivering greenfield exploration projects, with highly desirable exposure to the application of your science in effectively exploring for porphyry and basin-hosted copper mineral systems.  
  • Tertiary qualification in Geoscience, Geophysics and/or Physics; postgraduate credentials or equivalent in applied research is highly desirable; deep expertise in mineral systems and economic geology; and demonstrable experience integrating your science with structural geology, geochemistry, tectonics/geodynamics and prospectivity modelling.  
  • Proactively able to build strategic internal and external relationships.  
  • Ability to influence and lead change by creating a coaching culture and developing capability across functions.  
  • Proven expertise in cutting through complexity and crafting long term, value creating strategies.  
  • Innovative mindset and learning agility with an ability to use risk intelligence to enable growth and better decisions.  
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is desirable.
