About the Role

 

Functionally reporting to the Area Lead Engineering (Closure, Environment and Tailings), who will provide line management, development and project support as required. The Lead Project Engineer (LPE) is a core member of the project Owners Team supporting the Study Lead/Manager who has overall project accountability during the Study Phases (Development) and the Delivery Lead/Manager during the Execution Phase (Delivery). This role will support a range of projects from Studies (Development) through to Execution (Delivery). These projects cover a full range of assets and locations across the BHPs Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) mining and non-mining operations (Ore Handling, Rail and Non-process Infrastructure), with a focus on one or more of the following areas – pending portfolio spread:

- Closure and Rehabilitation

- Contaminated Sites

- Tailings and Dams

- Mine Development


Location: Based in Perth, Western Australia. A requirement of this role is intermittent travel to site for short periods (<5 days), when required.


Core Responsibilities:
 
Overseeing and developing project engineering strategies, engineering inputs, and managing Engineering Service Provider(s) (ESPs) and other external technical consultants/specialists, to ensure the technical outputs are optimised. This includes enabling sustainable design, safe and efficient construction, commissioning, operation, handover and maintenance of assets whilst achieving project objectives within schedule, budget and quality requirements, in line with relevant legislation and regulations.

 

The Project Engineering Function is effectively the project’s engineering lead/manager and will:

 

  • Provide a proactive safety focus in both design and execution work.
  • Drive effective engineering outcomes through proactive ESP performance management, facilitation of design development workshops and reviews, and enabling timely delivery of engineering deliverables by ensuring Owner input is provided appropriately.
  • Drive Engineering Effectiveness though identification and realisation of Engineering Scope Optimisation and Value Engineering opportunities through the project.
  • Support the Study and/or Delivery Lead with the development of key project deliverables in accordance with Our Requirements and the Minerals Australia Projects Internal Standard.

Core Functional Accountabilities:

 

  • The LPE will acts as a single point of contact for all project engineering and engineering management inputs and deliverables on a range of projects or delegate this to their direct reports (Principal and Specialist Project Engineers).
  • Taking responsibility for the development of project specific deliverables including
  • Contribution to the BHP Project Team (often referred to as the Owners Team) project related deliverables where required. Examples include:
  • Contribute to Owner’s Team project activities where required
  • Drive implementation of BHP’s Health, Safety, Environment, Community Constructability, Operability and Maintainability (HSECCOM) process in alignment with SAF-076.
  • Lead performance management of services provided by third parties (i.e., ESPs and other external technical consultants/specialists) for the project
  • Liaise with and seek input from various stakeholders and technical functions within BHP
  • Drive adherence to all statutory, operational technical and engineering standards or challenging these where appropriate.
  • Drive the capture of project lessons learnt from projects for incorporation into continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support the Operational Readiness function by providing engineering related data in order to enable the effective transition to Operations where applicable for the Project.
  • Lead the Principal and Specialist Project Engineers who report to them and manage their performance against Key Performance Indicators and support their Development.

About You

 

To be successful in this role it is important that you are comfortable working within dynamic environments and have demonstrated experience managing ESP engineering effort. You will need to be an effective problem solver and influencer, possessing strong communications skills through all levels of stakeholder engagement. Your ability to manage multiple levels of complexity and clarify ambiguity will also be a key strength for this role. 

In addition to the above, the following will be key selection criteria:  


•    Minimum 12 years’ experience in Projects.
•    Strong Project Engineering/Engineering Management experience.
•    Experience working with or managing ESPs and deliverable development.
•    Civil / Environmental / Mechanical / Process Engineer or similar discipline with experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
      o    Closure and Rehabilitation
      o    Contaminated Sites
      o    Tailings and Dams
      o    Mine Development.
