About the Role
We are seeking forward‑thinking and highly capable individuals to take on the role of Lead Project Engineer within the Copper Coal Asset Project Portfolio.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Engineering professional to work with a range of stakeholders across Projects, Operations, and Engineering, where your expertise and judgement will have a material impact on safety, value, and technical outcomes.
Reporting to the Area Lead Engineering, this role supports the delivery of engineering strategies, standards, and frameworks to ensure the engineering process and design are optimised and enable safe, efficient construction, commissioning, and operation. You act as a conduit between Engineering Service Providers (ESPs) and Engineering Management to drive value optimisation and engineering effectiveness.
In this role, the Lead Project Engineer provides expertise to guide the study team, delivery team and engineering service providers through project and discipline engineering, along with a deep understanding of engineering processes to provide great outcomes for CCAP and the Asset. The role supports the study team, through the project development lifecycle phases to achieve successful submission of investment approval requests.
Accountabilities
- Manages engineering service providers (ESPs) and proactively resolves all matters relating to ESP performance.
- Responsible for delivering engineering solutions based on a deep understanding of the business and project lifecycle, incorporating the principles of value engineering and engineering effectiveness.
- Review project performance and adapt plans, altering cost, timing or quality constraints in line with stakeholder expectations to continually maximise the engineering value across the project.
- Aligns the delivery of engineering designs to BHP standards and holds the Engineering Service Provider accountable to manage all design risks.
- Contributes to and supports all sustainability and safety in design processes across the project development (HAZID / HAZOP / HAZAN etc.)
- Anticipates and addresses engineering risks, variances and quality issues across the project by making risk informed decisions utilising proactive change management before they impact project delivery.
- Contributes to verifying facility construction methodologies are aligned with project engineering standards, the basis of design and Sustainability in Design processes.
- Identifies the root cause of issues and evaluates multiple solutions to ensure a structured and methodical approach to solving complex problems.
- Identifies, engages, and works with a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Provides day‑to‑day technical leadership, coaching and performance oversight for assigned engineering team members to support effective project delivery.
About You
- Demonstrated extensive years of relevant project experience with tertiary qualifications in Engineering and relevant experience in Project Management.
- In depth experience in working with engineering service providers
- Experience in delivering of Process / NPI projects
- Energetic and detail-oriented, thrives under pressure while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and meeting tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen, with experience managing risk and governance to deliver projects safely, on time, and on budget.
- Actively identifies and delivers continuous improvement and value optimisation initiatives.
- Applies complex judgement and strong analytical capability to resolve technical and strategic challenges.
- Results-driven with solid technical expertise, complemented by excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- An experienced professional passionate about mentoring and coaching, with strong leadership skills and a proven ability to lead project teams
Location
This role is based in Adelaide on a Monday-Friday roster but offers BHPs flexible work arrangement.
This role will also involve some site travel as required.
