About the Role
Lead Tax – Minerals Americas provides technical expertise in the support of our Tax teams in the management of international, corporate, and regional tax matters, attendance to BHP’s tax obligations and external reporting requirements, and governance of tax risk and tax reporting/compliance to meet statutory requirements which includes the following:
- Deliver against performance targets, maintain operational discipline, ensure quality of service working collaboratively within a high performance regional tax team.
- Conduct tax research and analysis; development and implementation of tax advice.
- Be accountable for the accuracy and completeness of tax data and/or analysis provided to tax management or other internal/external stakeholders, ensuring that tax risks and opportunities are identified, quantified and incorporated in advice.
- Ensure that tax compliance, forecasting and reporting activities are performed in a timely, accurate and efficient manner and assist with planning for such activities.
- Develop business partner relationships with key stakeholders within the businesses and functions as well as externally.
- Identify process improvements and assist with implementation.
Main Accountabilities
- Conform with the BHP Billiton Charter, Code of Conduct, GLDs, Tax function standards (including the Tax Risk Standard) and relevant statutory obligations.
- An overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
- Primary focus will be on tax matters pertaining to Minerals Americas and includes providing tax support to the VP Americas for Brazilian tax aspects of Samarco operations (e.g. tax disputes, judicial recovery, Renova Foundation and TTAC); PS&D support; support for corporate tax activities (e.g., financial statement reporting, global structuring initiatives, Treasury activities, etc.).
- Contribute to maintaining a culture of innovation, learning and development and continuous improvement and be an agent for change.
- Proactively identify and recommend opportunities for internal control implementation and continuous improvement initiatives within work area.
- Maintain strong relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders listed under Key Relationships across multiple locations.
- Coordinate and review the development of tax positions and advice that are accurate and optimally beneficial to the Group.
- Apply the Tax Risk Standard in all tax advice or responses provided to customers, other group functions or external parties.
- Manage the tax compliance and reporting calendar for the area of responsibility to ensure timely submission of tax returns, tax payments, and financial statements.
- Review material local tax return, ensure accuracy and timely filing as well as documentation and communication of any issues identified.
- Actively manage ongoing tax audits, controversies, and litigations, engaging with local tax regulator audit teams as necessary.
- Provide input into industry and government initiatives that affect fiscal and economic changes,
- Provide tax advice on business activities and respond to tax queries from the Business.
About You
To be a top performer you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree qualification in accounting or finance.
- At least 10 years practical experience with corporate income tax matters delivered in a highly complex multinational business or professional services firm.
- Deep technical and practical experience with Brazilian tax issues.
- Experience with international tax planning, controversy management, compliance and reporting across multiple jurisdictions.
- Experience in implementing tax processes and projects.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong project leadership skills.
- Strong skills in coaching and developing team members.
- High level MS Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Fluent Portuguese and English, both verbal and written.
Desirable:
- Professional qualification (CA, CPA) or similar tax qualifications.
- Tax experience in resources industry.
- Working knowledge of SAP is desirable.
- Experience with tax provision and tax compliance software (e.g. OneSource, ProTax) a plus.
