About the Role
The Legal Counsel – Technology & IP will provide legal support for:
- Technology, Enterprise & Innovation Procurement;
- Innovation (mostly on strategic contracting work); and
- Strategic and high-risk intellectual property matters (mostly commercial contracting work, not registered IP management or IP disputes).
The role will support two senior BHP lawyers: Managing Counsel – Procurement and Managing Counsel - IP.
The role will provide Legal support to relevant BHP stakeholders to ensure that Procurement-, Technology-, and IP-related legal risks are identified and managed in accordance with BHP’s Charter Values, IP strategy, AI Strategy & Framework and commercial objectives.
The role reports to the Head of Legal - Technology & Procurement and can be based in Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide. Occasional interstate and international travel may be required.
The key accountabilities are to:
- Advise Technology, Enterprise & Innovation Procurement on contracts requiring Legal review or endorsement, and other high value / risk matters.
- Advise Innovation on strategic contracting work.
- Support the Managing Counsel – IP to advise on strategic and high-risk intellectual property matters (mostly commercial contracting work, not registered IP management or IP disputes).
- Establish relationships with relevant teams in Procurement, Technology, Innovation and Technical, and act as a key point of contact.
- Identify Technology- and IP-related legal risks and advise on the management of those risks.
- Engage with other Legal teams to ensure consistent delivery of legal support to relevant stakeholders.
- Contribute expertise to, and support, Legal and other BHP initiatives, projects and transactions as required.
- Contribute to knowledge management activities as required, including developing and delivering training to Legal, Procurement, Technology, Innovation and other stakeholders on technology- and IP-related legal issues.
- Identify, design and implement continuous improvement opportunities in respect of legal advice on technology- and IP-related matters.
About You
- Proven relevant post-admission experience in a well-regarded law firm and / or corporate legal department and current Australian practising certificate.
- Demonstrated experience advising on:
- complex technology procurement matters;
- contracts for innovation teams; and
- complex IP matters (mostly in the context of commercial contracts).
