About Mt Arthur Coal

 

 

Mt Arthur Coal is an open-cut coal mine 100 per cent owned by BHP. Located in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales it's the largest producer of energy coal in the region, operating alongside olive growers, wine makers, horse breeders and the nearby residential community of Muswellbrook.

About the Role

 

This role, reporting to the General Manager provides leadership to a team or teams focussed on the supervision of operations (e.g. mining, production, plant), including statutory positions. Translates strategy into operational plans for the department.

 

Key role accountabilities include;

 

  • Supervises operational activities (e.g. mining, production, plant) to enable the delivery of continuous safe operations
  • Conducts routine operational and safety activities to effectively prepare for and manage operational workload
  • Uses and interprets data from operational digital interfaces/systems/technologies to make decisions and overcome challenges in an increasingly digital work environment
  • Responds to and manages emergencies/fixed plant hazards, complies with regulatory requirements and performs first level maintenance activities to maximise safety and safeguard production targets in a fixed plant environment
  • Identifies and assesses risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes
  • Prioritises work effort and resources accordingly
  • Engages the capabilities of the entire organisation
  • Strives to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste
  • Knows our customer and is obsessed with meeting their needs
About You

 

 

You are a strategic and safety-focused operational leader with a strong background in mining, production, or plant environments. You thrive in dynamic, digitally enabled workplaces and are confident using data and technology to drive performance and solve complex challenges. Your leadership style is inclusive and empowering—you engage teams across the organisation to deliver safe, efficient, and value-driven outcomes.

You are deeply committed to risk management and regulatory compliance, and you lead by example in fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement. With a sharp focus on customer value and operational excellence, you prioritise effectively, allocate resources wisely, and never lose sight of the bigger picture. To be successful in the role, you will also have:

 

  • Extensive coal processing plant leadership / familiarity
  • Experience leading highly unionised workforce.
