Carrapateena is a large, modern underground copper-gold operation and one of South Australia’s most significant mining developments in the past decade. Located approximately 160km north of Port Augusta on the traditional lands of the Kokatha people.

Carrapateena combines cutting-edge mining methods with a strong focus on safety, innovation and performance.

With an expected mine life of more than 20 years and ongoing investment to expand production, including the transition to large-scale block cave mining, Carrapateena offers the opportunity to build a long-term career in a future-focused operation.

Designed with automation, digital systems and efficiency at its core, the site provides exposure to advanced underground mining and evolving technologies, supporting safer, smarter and more connected ways of working.

 

We currently have a vacancy for a Manager HSS, reporting to the Head of HSS Copper SA. This is a permanent leadership opportunity responsible for leading the strategic management of health, radiation, hygiene, security, safety, emergency management and HS assurance activities across the operation.

The Challenge Ahead

As Manager HSS, you will play a critical leadership role in shaping and embedding a high-performance health, safety, security, emergency and assurance culture at Carrapateena. Working closely with operational and functional leaders, you will translate strategy into practical operational plans while driving continuous improvement across risk management, health management and assurance processes.

This role offers the opportunity to influence key business outcomes, strengthen organisational capability and lead a team committed to safe, sustainable and productive performance. You will partner with diverse stakeholders across the business to manage risk, support operational excellence and contribute to the ongoing success of one of Australia's leading underground mining operations.

 

What You’ll Bring to the Role

You are an experienced people leader with a strong background in health, safety, security or emergency management within a complex operational environment. You bring the ability to influence at senior leadership level, build strong stakeholder relationships and drive outcomes that create long-term value.

You will also bring:

  • Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to negotiate outcomes across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and community groups.
  • Well-developed technical expertise across health, safety, security and emergency services disciplines.
  • A tertiary qualification in health, safety or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary HSS risk management principles, concepts and practices.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving capability, with the ability to make evidence-based decisions aligned to strategic business objectives.
  • Experience working within regulated mining or heavy industry environments. Knowledge of mining legislation is advantageous.

 

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and support the continual improvement of safety risk management practices to enhance organisational safety outcomes and performance.
  • Provide leadership and specialist expertise in managing health-related risks and improving organisational capability in health management.
  • Drive structured problem-solving and decision-making approaches to address complex operational challenges.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Apply and strengthen risk management frameworks while fostering a proactive, risk-aware culture.
  • Support operational performance by leveraging an understanding of business priorities, the operating model and value chain objectives.
  • Engage the broader organisation to deliver safe, productive and customer-focused outcomes.
  • Champion BHP’s aspiration of 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste.

Work Location

This role is based at Carrapateena and operates on a 5/2, 4/3 roster. This is a permanent position within the Copper SA HSS leadership team.
