About the Role

Reporting to the Vice President Tax Minerals Australia, this role leads the Corporate Tax portfolio within Group Tax, with responsibility for Australian direct tax compliance, reporting, and consolidation in a large listed multinational company.

The role also has accountability for the Minerals Australia Coal portfolio, providing strategic tax support to BHP’s operational assets.

You will lead a high-performing team of senior tax professionals, requiring strong people leadership and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will drive delivery across large-scale tax reporting and compliance programs, while also shaping outcomes through high-quality technical advice and commercial insight.

The position requires deep experience managing Australian corporate tax obligations at scale, including tax effect accounting, and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex technical issues while maintaining a strong focus on risk management and governance.

As a senior member of the team, you will act as a thought leader on tax policy and regulatory developments, interpreting emerging changes and assessing their impact on the BHP Group—particularly in relation to capital decisions, funding, and broader business strategy.

The role involves engagement with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including senior business leaders, other functional teams, and regulators. Success in the role requires the ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly and succinctly, and to influence outcomes across both technical and commercial environments.

Key Accountabilities:

The role is accountable for:

  • Delivering accurate and timely corporate income tax outcomes, including tax effect accounting (AASB 112 / IAS 12), tax reporting disclosures, and the preparation and lodgement of income tax returns, ensuring all positions are robust and documented to the required standards.
  • Ensuring optimal tax outcomes and effective risk management by identifying, assessing, and managing tax risks and uncertain tax positions, and driving issues through to resolution in line with internal governance frameworks and regulator expectations.
  • Leading and developing a high-performing team of senior tax professionals, setting clear priorities, reviewing outputs, and embedding strong delivery discipline across reporting and compliance cycles.
  • Providing tax leadership on major capital projects, M&A activity, and significant commercial arrangements, including the review of key contracts and ensuring tax support on key investment processes.
  • Overseeing corporate tax compliance and reporting for the Australian group, including consolidation, and ensuring alignment with Group reporting timelines, processes, and control requirements.
  • Monitoring and interpreting changes in tax legislation and regulatory guidance and assessing impact on the Group, translating these into clear, actionable outcomes for the business—particularly in relation to capital investments and asset-intensive operations.
  • Maintaining and operating governance through adherence to key controls and governance standards, ensuring effective controls, documentation, and review processes are in place to support a low-risk tax profile and strong external assurance outcomes.
  • Managing key internal and external stakeholder relationships, including senior Finance and business leaders, external auditors, and the Australian Taxation Office, ensuring clear and effective communication of complex tax matters.
  • Driving continuous improvement in tax processes, systems, and data, leveraging the BHP Operating System to enhance efficiency, standardisation, and quality of outputs across the team.

About You

  • Substantial experience providing complex tax advice and managing tax compliance and financial reporting processes within a highly complex multinational business and/or professional services firm.
