About the Role
• Provides leadership to a multi-disciplinary team or teams focused on the technical knowledge base for the sites, specifically the collection, analysis and interpretation of tailings, geotechnical, environmental, and hydrogeologic data, and integration of technical knowledge into an Integrated Knowledge Base to provide guidance for planning and decision making. Translates strategy into operational plans for the department.
• Has knowledge of tailings storage facilities, groundwater, and geochemistry to guide a team of subject matter experts in use of site models to select target areas and appropriate methodologies for sampling, data collection and analysis to build technical knowledge base that enables value decisions for BHP.
• Makes evidence based and strategic decisions in alignment with longer term business objectives and site outcomes.
• Evaluates and quantifies the uncertainty associated with data and models to assess impacts of potential changes and uncertainty on site risk and closure planning.
• Identifies, engages, and manages a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders including HSE, Corporate Affairs, Projects with the goals of compiling Integrated Knowledge Base and informing planning process.
• Leads technical teams to support project execution for multidiscipline civil projects including implementation of quality assurance processes
• Leads the team in planning, tracking the delivery of and managing execution of directional studies to inform planning process and execution of outcomes.
• Workforce development, including coordinating with educational institutions to attract early career employees, and work internally to set up and progress development plans to retain and strengthen the company’s technical capacity.
• Evaluate scope of site characterization programs to ensure adequate information is being obtained to inform design and analysis and decision-making processes.
• Identifies and assesses technical risks including tailings storage facility, source control and fall of ground risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework, and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes.
• Prioritizes work effort and resources accordingly.
• Works with Human Resources, Corporate Technical Centers of Excellence, and educational institutes to develop workforce capacity.
• Engages with other members of industry and Universities to identify and progress Research & Development initiatives that progress interest of the business.
• Engages the capabilities of the entire organization.
• Strives to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste.
• Travel to site locations in Canada and the USA
• Telecommuting permitted up to 40%
About You
Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Mining, or related technical field followed by 10 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in job offered or in a Manager Technical-related occupation.
Position requires demonstrated experience in each of the following:
• Developing multidiscipline conceptual site models to inform priorities and strategic outcomes.
• Experience in all phases of tailings storage facility lifecycle including designing, permitting, constructing, operating and closure.
• Experience with surface and groundwater management including site characterization, analysis, design and implementation of systems and infrastructure.
• Integrating technical knowledge with other sources of knowledge (e.g. social, economic) to inform priorities and strategic outcomes.
• Setting priorities, identifying critical paths, and establishing effective key performance indicators.
• Workforce development including external engagement and internal employee retention and growth of technical capacity.
• Travel to site locations in Canada and the USA.
• Telecommuting permitted up to 40%.
