About the Role
As part of BHP’s Strategy & Market Intelligence team within Portfolio Strategy and Development, this role is responsible for shaping BHP’s strategic direction in copper and potash, supporting disciplined capital allocation, maintaining balance sheet strength, strengthening shareholder confidence, and enhancing BHP’s long-term competitive advantage.
Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy and Market Intelligence, or equivalent, the role will lead the development of BHP’s commodity strategies for copper and potash. This includes accountability for Commodity Price Protocol development, commodity and asset strategy formulation, and the delivery of enterprise-wide strategic initiatives. The role will provide critical insight and recommendations to inform Executive Leadership Team and Board decision-making.
The role will be based in a BHP office in Santiago, Chile or Saskatoon, Canada, subject to business requirements. Domestic and international travel may be required.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the development of long-term supply, demand and price outlooks for copper and potash, including ownership of Commodity Price Protocols
- Translate commodity insights into portfolio strategy and capital allocation recommendations, including the evaluation of growth options, major projects and strategic investments
- Ensure alignment between commodity outlooks and asset strategies, including assessment of asset competitiveness across global cost curves and relative peer positioning
- Monitor and analyse the external market environment, including macroeconomic conditions, competitor strategies, policy developments, and emerging risks and opportunities
- Apply deep understanding of commodity value chains to identify and articulate sources of sustainable competitive advantage for BHP
- Lead scenario analysis and risk assessment to support robust decision-making under conditions of uncertainty
- Engage in strategic dialogue with senior leaders, translating complex analysis into clear, decision-ready insights for the Executive Leadership Team and Board
- Optimise risk and reward through a clear understanding of the value drivers underpinning decisions, strategies and plans across the portfolio
- Identify, engage and manage a broad range of diverse internal and external stakeholders
- Lead, coach and develop a high-performing commodity strategy team, fostering a culture consistent with BHP’s values
About You
- Relevant tertiary qualification in commerce, economics, engineering, finance, science or a related discipline
- Extensive experience in mining, natural resources or commodity markets, with a strong understanding of copper and/or fertiliser value chains
- Demonstrated experience in strategy, corporate development, market intelligence or capital allocation, preferably within a complex global organisation
- Strong analytical capability, including experience in market modelling, financial analysis and scenario planning
- Proven ability to synthesise complex information into clear strategic recommendations and executable actions
- Exceptional communication skills, including experience preparing materials for, and presenting to, Executive and Board-level stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in environments of complexity and ambiguity, supporting risk- and value-based decision-making
- Proven experience leading high-performing teams and working collaboratively across multiple functions, regions and geographies
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability across technical, commercial and corporate disciplines
- Experience in consulting or strategy advisory environments will be highly regarded
