About the Role

In our dynamic, hands-on and highly energising environment, you will lead the advancement of both the industry and BHP’s strategic capabilities and technical system designs, as realised within our own business digital transformation.
In this newly created role representing BHP’s senior distinguished data position in service of emerging AI technologies, you will be responsible for technical excellence in data as needed to enable AI techniques including machine learning, deep learning, generative and computer vision. Additionally, you will guide and mentor data leaders and engineers across the company and collaborate across teams, projects and broader leadership to align data with AI business goals and outcomes.
As the Practice Lead Data Excellence, you will be accountable for:
- Defining technical excellence for BHP’s global and distributed data systems, prioritizing AI consumption, cross-business scalability and integration, governance and security, and total cost of ownership.
- Characterizing the minimum sufficient requirements for Data that Assets and Functions must meet to maximize value, meet external commitments, and manage risks that are material at the Company level.
- Developing capability across BHP to adopt value of mature Data tools and use in AI, including establishing and managing awareness across the business.
- Monitoring and tracking Data excellence. Providing objective assurance over material risks and strategic objectives, focused on providing constructive and actionable recommendations to Assets and Functions to close gaps in performance.
- Collaborating with the Ecosystems team to maintain a pool of high caliber Data expertise and a preferred external network of expertise on current and emerging global data best practice across core disciplines to share high value opportunities for replication, lessons learnt, and to respond to Asset requests for advice on problems of a technical nature.
As the Practice Lead Data Excellence, you can be based in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth or Santiago, however for other BHP office locations can be considered.
About You
You will be a seasoned professional who has extensive experience in similar roles (eg. Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Solutions Architect) and has a background in successfully optimising AI designs and modelling performance through data architecture and services.
By nature, you are a systems thinker who enjoys solving complex business challenges through the use of data and is able to gather insights which you are able to translate into actions and follow through with achieving sustainable outcomes and maximize value.
Thriving in fast-paced environments, you will have a passion for learning new technologies that can improve our business and the way we work. Additionally, you will be energised by change, will be comfortable in drawing on your strong communication and relationship skills to influence your peers and leaders to deliver measurable and meaningful results.
A tertiary qualification in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology (or equivalent) is required.
