About the Role
As Practice Lead, Strategic Portfolio, you will be joining the Resource Centre of Excellence (RCoE) team and play a pivotal role in shaping enterprise decision‑making where you will provide leadership and assurance over the evaluation, optimisation and risk assessment of mining opportunities, and deliver strategic and due‑diligence insights to support BHP’s corporate development agenda.
In this role, you will be accountable for:
- Leading technical assurance for corporate development strategic projects (including mergers, acquisitions and divestments) to ensure material risks, opportunities and value drivers are rigorously quantified and strategically interpreted to inform enterprise‑level decisions.
- Shaping commercial valuations and investment decisions by providing clear insights on the strategic implications, value sensitivities and risk-adjusted outcomes emerging from technical assurance activities.
- Overseeing independent technical reviews to ensure the highest standards of technical rigour are consistently applied, enabling executives to make confident, evidence-based decisions on strategic capital allocation.
- Supporting the enterprise allocation of RCoE and Technical resources to maximise value creation, minimise rework, and optimise capability deployment across the portfolio.
- Providing strategic oversight of Mine Plans by challenging assumptions, strengthening input quality and driving alignment to organisational priorities, ensuring plans translate into strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Mobilising and integrating organisational capabilities by fostering cross‑functional collaboration, knowledge sharing and disciplined ways of working that accelerate performance.
You can be based in Brisbane, Santiago or Denver.
About You
You are an accomplished mining leader with an ability to shape and deliver complex, large‑scale mining projects—from early concept through execution and successful completion. You are known for pairing technical credibility with commercial judgement, and for setting standards in safety performance, environmental stewardship and sustainable value creation.
Your influence is evident in your leadership of rigorous technical due diligence programs that underpin major acquisition and divestment decisions. You bring direction to evaluation frameworks, synthesize multidisciplinary inputs, and translate complex technical insights into clear, value‑driven recommendations that enable confident decision‑making.
A trusted leader, you build relationships across diverse stakeholders, including regulators, joint‑venture partners and communities, and balance stakeholder expectations while driving alignment to project and organisational objectives. As a people leader, you excel at building and leading high‑performing technical teams, with the ability to develop capability, foster accountability and strengthen culture. You are results‑focused and thrive in dynamic environments where you deliver against multiple, interdependent priorities.
A tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering (or equivalent) is required.
