About the Team


This deeply technical global team:


  • Identifies, promotes and leads the implementation of industry leading practice in tailings excellence, as a part of the Technical Centre of Excellence; and
  • Defines technical standards and guidance, and assures against those standards as a “second line of assurance” within BHP’s risk management process.


We are currently looking for a leading global tailings professional to:

  • Work with the Head of Tailings (HoT) Excellence and Practice Lead(s) to provide technical leadership, including reviewing BHP’s portfolio of tailings storages facilities as part of the second line of assurance;
  • Providing deep technical support to tailings activities across BHP as required;
  • Supporting the development of the profession internally and externally; and
  • Supporting research initiatives, and the development and implementation of technology.

About the Role

This role has the flexible work options including the location of the role. This role will provide deep techncial support to the HoT, the Practice Lead, the Tailings Working Group, external Engineers of Record and Tailings Review Boards, and BHP’s Dam engineers and risk owners

This role will support the development and maintenance of relationships with external research and industry organisations, and share these learning and collaborative benefits internally through the organisation.

You will also work with external consultants to ensure the highest level of technical advice is provided to assets and projects for the design, management and operations of tailings dams.

 As part of the Tailings Excellence Team, you will also contribute to:

  • Leading global continuous improvement in tailings;
  • Maintains a company-wide strategic view of tailings risks for projects, operations and closed mines; 
  • Continuous improvement of standards, including implementation across the business;
  • Incorporating technical risk management into the business process and systems;
  • Managing key internal and external development stakeholders, Business and Asset Leadership Teams, Project Steering Committees, governance groups, joint venture partners, and commercial partners as appropriate;
  • Developing an internal & external network of geotechnical professionals, & promoting a culture of excellence & continuous improvement as a trusted advisor across the portfolio of BHP Billiton Assets; and
  • Understanding the key legal and regulatory risks, and developing a strategy with appropriate lead times to ensure that the business case can be delivered.

About You

You will have Tertiary qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering and/or a related discipline whilst possessing a deep technical understanding of tailings dams, and mining operations globally. 

Your extensive experience in tailings dam management and your experience in hydrology and water management across multiple commodities and geographies will see you excel in this role. You will be forward thinking, a strong influencer, a good listener and identifying and seeking opportunities for improvement, while having the ability to influence others and manage change.

As well as your proven experience in dam management, you will come with a broad background and be able to work across all commodities within our portfolio. Your knowledge and understanding of BHP’s operations portfolio will assist you with your technical background.

You will be a proactive team player with the ability to deal with both strategic and technical issues across all of BHP portfolio of tailings dams. You will need to deal with numerous projects, priorities actions and have exceptional attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels and disciplines. Previous exposure within a similar environments and teams in the mining industry is essential.  

Demonstrated active contributions to industry publications, academic journals and advisory groups would be highly regarded.

Proficiency in English and Spanish would be advantageous.
