About the Role


BHP is generating large amounts of data from different sources. Reporting to the Manager Data Analytics and Engineering, your task as a Principal Advanced Analytics Platform Engineer, is to provide expertise in the design, implementation and continuous improvements of BHP’s core Advanced Analytics platform. This platform provides a re-usable capability for project teams and customer groups to leverage to solve their business problems, or optimise their business processes using ML and AI techniques.

Through a diverse range of project and team engagements you will gain exposure to various problem spaces and data domains and bring your expertise in modern data centric technologies to the table to guide, propose, document and implement world-class solutions.


We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer with an interest in ML and Cloud Data Engineering and who is excited to build & improve on a re-usable platform for Data Scientists and Decision Scientists to use.

Key responsibilities include:


  • Work within the Advanced Analytics Platform team to provide expertise in guiding the design and ongoing success of BHP’s core advanced analytics offerings (comprising of AWS PaaS services e.g. Sagemaker, EMR, Glue, Airflow and Snowflake Data Science capabilities) for our wide variety of user groups and customers.
  • Liaise closely with our Data Storage & Processing platform team (S3, Snowflake, DBT etc) to provide seamless ingestion to consumption experience for our users embarking on advanced analytics projects.
  • Liaise closely with out Visualisation product team (PowerBI/Spotfire) to complement the existing analytics offerings with Advanced Analytics capabilities.
  • Liaise with business users and the BHP data science community for requirements and running trainings on best practices.
  • Liaise with project delivery partners, providing advice and consultations.
  • Seek to continuously improve the Advanced Analytics platforms with automation opportunities, cost optimisation, monitoring and guidance on new feature releases.
  • Champion the adoption of BHP Enterprise Data Platforms throughout the business
  • Define, communicate and maintain standards, frameworks, guidelines and best practice engineering guides for advanced analytics offerings.
  • Engage with our operations teams to understand platform issues and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Fulfil (where necessary) a Data Engineer role on customer projects, bringing your platform expertise to enable successful delivery of solutions using our data platforms.
  • Pro-actively engage and collaborate with Data Platform Architecture, Cyber Security, other Data Platform Teams (e.g. Data Management and Integration), Project Teams and BHP Cloud Teams.

About You


You are a person with a drive for continuous learning and adaptability to new technologies. You enjoy keeping up to date with the latest happenings in the market in regard to data-centric platforms.


You will bring your hands-on expertise in modern data-centric technologies to the table engineer and implement world-class data platforms. You are also an excellent communicator who can guide and influence project and program stakeholders across the organization.


As a successful candidate you will possess the following:


  • 5+ years in hands-on data engineering orientated roles with primarily cloud-based PaaS and SaaS platforms.
  • 5+ years professional exposure to modern/cloud data centric platforms and infrastructure - including enterprise data warehouses/data lakes, master data, integration platforms, data virtualisation, reporting/data warehousing and advanced analytics platforms.
  • 2+ years experience and expertise in source control and CI/CD practices.
  • Hands-on experience (personal or professional) with common data science libraries, languages and tools (e.g. jupyter notebooks, tensorflow, r-scripting, python scripting, pandas etc) as well as knowledge of general data science practices including common algorithms etc.
  • Experience (personal or professional) with MLops toolsets, processes.
  • Experience in the creation of data platform related patterns and/or engineering best practices/guides for wide user consumption
  • Understanding of patterns, techniques and principles relating to enterprise integration, data warehousing, data hubs, data virtualisation and advanced analytics solutions.
  • 2+ years experience working within an Agile, DevOps and Product Team mindset.
  • Proven stakeholder engagement skills and ability to guide and train others
  • Drive for continuous learning/improvement and adaptable to new technologies and approaches.
  • Excellent communicator, both verbal and written


  • Experience with PowerBi and Snowflake is highly advantageous.



In this full-time permanent role, there is flexibility to be based at BHP Perth or Brisbane office.
You will be working Monday – Friday and offers flexible work arrangements.
