About the Role
As a Principal Artificial Intelligence within the Project Centre of Excellence (PCoE), you will partner with project teams across BHP’s global portfolio to identify opportunities where Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Digital technologies can create measurable business value. You will work across the full solution lifecycle, from understanding project value drivers and business processes, identifying opportunities and developing business cases, through to designing, building and deploying production-ready solutions. Success in this role requires balancing technical expertise with strong business acumen, helping teams scope initiatives, manage delivery and measure realised value against the cost and value drivers that influence capital project outcomes.
You will develop Python applications and build scalable, maintainable software using modern engineering practices, including Git-based workflows, automated testing, CI/CD, code quality tooling and sound software design principles. You will also leverage machine learning, data science, Generative AI, SQL, MLOps and cloud technologies to solve complex business challenges and support data-driven decision making.
Working closely with project delivery teams, functional specialists and BHP Technology, you will help bring innovative solutions from concept through to production and sustained business adoption. Your work will focus on improving how Capital Projects are planned, governed and executed, while creating measurable value for the business.
This role offers the opportunity to work with emerging technologies such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, prompting strategies and agentic systems, applying them in practical ways to improve project performance and business outcomes.
Based in the Americas, with BHP’s corporate offices located in Santiago, Chile, you will be part of a global and collaborative environment that values innovation, continuous improvement and business impact.

About You
Non-Negotiable Requirements
- STEM degree.
- Experience developing Python applications.
- Experience with automated testing and CI/CD.
- Strong business acumen, including project management, business cases and value realization.
- English and Spanish proficiency (B2+).

- Business analysis, requirements gathering and process mapping.
- Stakeholder management, change management and problem solving.
- Support of large-scale capital projects and project governance.
- Software design, refactoring and code quality practices.
- Data modelling, machine learning, statistical modelling and NLP.
- Generative AI, MLOps and UI development (Python and/or JavaScript).
- Delivery of AI solutions from concept to business adoption.
- Communication of business impact to senior leaders.
- Technical documentation and translation of technical concepts for business audiences.
