About Mt Arthur Coal 


Mt Arthur Coal is in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The site produces coal predominantly for international customers in the energy sector.
BHP announced in June 2022 that they will retain Mt Arthur Coal in its portfolio, seek the relevant approvals to continue mining beyond its current mining consent that expires in 2026 and prepare for closure by the end of FY2030.

About the Role


Reporting to the Superintendent Environment as part of the Closure Planning & Environment Team, your primary responsibility will be the coordination of biodiversity related activities including biological surveys, technical reporting, spatial data analysis, interpretation of results, establishment of closure criteria and objectives, internal and external reporting to support Mt Arthur’s transition to closure in 2030 and active closure post 2030.  You will work with engineers, technical consultants and delivery partners to ensure that relevant surveys, studies and reports meet Mt Arthur Coal and government requirements.


Core responsibilities will include: 

 

  • Be a leader in the application of the BHP Charter values, and a positive influence on business outcomes and others
  • Provide biodiversity and ecological technical advice to support operational compliance across both site rehabilitation and offsite conservation properties
  • Responsible for both Federal and NSW regulator engagement, participation in relevant industry working groups and compliance reporting in line with Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016
  • Responsible for the development of ecological components of the site rehabilitation and closure criteria in conjunction with other key roles within the Closure Team
  • Project manage biological survey programs to support business and closure outcomes, including the assessment of alternative land use opportunities
  • Responsible for the analysis and interpretation of technical data provided in environmental approvals survey/monitoring and the provision of advice on future action/management
  • Identify & develop research opportunities and manage research projects with internal and external stakeholders
  • Apply effective understanding of ecological risks and threats to inform management planning and environmental risk management
  • Work with and direct consultants/ researchers to ensure adherence to project schedules and ecological survey guidelines and standards
  • Ensure compliance to to BHP’s biodiversity goals & commitments, such as United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and Nature Positive outcomes
  • Assist in the supervision of contractors undertaking surveys and maintenance works ensuring they are skilled and that they understand the purpose and functionality of the scope
  • Contribute to a high performing team culture with a focus on delivering world class outcomes for the closure of Mt Arthur Coal



To be successful in the role, the following skills and attributes are required:
 

  • Tertiary Degree in relevant discipline at a minimum i.e. biodiversity, ecology, bush regeneration
  • 5-10 plus years’ experience in biodiversity management, with experience in the mining and/or resource sector well-regarded; NSW experience preferred
  • Experience in planning, delivering and reporting on biological surveys and monitoring programs
  • Demonstrated understanding of ecological processes
  • Knowledge of relevant NSW technical and environmental factor guidelines relating to Environmental Impact Assessment and biodiversity obligations
  • Knowledge of NSW and Commonwealth environmental legislation and approvals processes
  • Demonstrated ability to reliably deliver team results and meet deadlines
  • Ability to engage and work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders such as the NSW Resources Regulator and NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust
  • Demonstrated experience using ARC GIS software
  • Application of environmental law, approval processes and standards, including ISO14001
  • Awareness and commitment to health and safety frameworks that relate to mobilisation and management of contractors in a mining environment well-regarded
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to achieve biodiversity project outcomes
