About the Role

 

As Principal Data Engineer, you will be the service owner of data solutions delivered by our Digital Factory team. You will proactively improve functionality, operational stability, availability and performance of these data services and data pipelines. 

 

An exciting role in a team of passionate, talented and diverse technology specialists striving for continuous improvement of critical systems leveraging the latest technologies and methodologies. 
Reporting to the Manager Supply Chain Applications Coal, your key accountabilities will include:

 

  • Embedding the principles, standards and patterns for Data Engineering 
  • Participate in incident management, identifying and resolving system issues
  • Lead problem management and root cause analysis for failures 
  • Provides technical expertise to Projects and other support teams to resolve priority issues, root cause analysis, implement complex changes and requests
  • Design, build, test and deploy Data solutions utilising modern development techniques and best practices in cloud environments
  • Leading resources for delivery of Data requirements using onshore & offshore resources 
  • Identify and lead initiatives for the improvement of Data service reliability, stability and performance
  • Develop strong relationships with other BHP teams, service partners, and vendors 
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement across people, process, technology and cost 

About You

 

  • Experience with building or managing data pipelines using AWS and one or more database technologies such as MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL is a must
  • Experience with Distributed Processing (like Spark, Hadoop, EMR) and Cloud database \ warehouse services (like DynamoDB, Snowflake) is preferred, but not mandatory
  • Experience with one or more integration tools and patterns (file based, API, streams,events) is highly preferred


You will have a tertiary qualification in Technology, Engineering, Computer Science or similar discipline and have post-qualification experience designing, developing, maintaining and supporting complex data solutions. You have strong analytical skills with an excellent understanding of root cause analysis, 5 whys or similar problem investigation methodologies.

 

As the preferred candidate, you have superior interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with the ability to develop meaningful relationships and influence stakeholders across all organisational levels.
